I got a 3rd party refurb'd iPhone 5 which included a knockoff cable with it. However the knockoff works absolutely fine for charging and for syncing both with the 5 and with my 5s when connected to my Mac. OS is latest iOS 7.0.4. However I've noticed it gives me a "This accessory may not be supported" message when connected to an iLuv car to USB charger. (iLuv makes iPhone-supported accessories but mine is several years old.)
Here are the combinations that work or don't work with the various cables:
Apple AC to USB charger: Apple certified cable works
Apple AC to USB charger: Fake cable works
Apple iMac USB port: Apple certified cable works
Apple iMac USB port: Fake cable works (both for charging and syncing)
iLuv car charger: Apple certified cable works
iLuv car charger: Fake cable usually gives me error message but not always, and still charges
This is the message I get with the above combination:
However, if I use a cheap eBay charger, the phone balks at it:
Cheap eBay car charger: Error message with Apple certified cable
Cheap eBay car charger: Error message with fake cable
This is the message I get with the above combinations:
As you can see, for the eBay car charger the error message is different, and comes up every time.
Anyone know how the Lightning authentication actually works? If the fake cable uses a reverse engineered chip, and it works with the iMac, I might have expected it to work with iLuv charger as well, but it gives that error message. I guess their reverse engineering is good, but not perfect.
Also, I'm thinking the second screengrab represents a power issue with the cheap car charger, and has nothing to do with authentication. The car charger is rated for 5V 1A, but I'm thinking it provides super unclean power.
