Anyone know how a vending machine accepts dollar bills?

I tried googling the subject, but came up short on sites that discuss this aspect of vending machines. Any suggestions?

it looks for key markers of the bill from what i understand. Well certain regions are looked at.

Thats what I thought too, that it uses a Oompa Loompa inside. The laser scanner seems like a better idea, but the money accepting machine is real time, and scanners usually take a while to determine what the scan is.

I know the stupid ugly new 20s didn't work in one change machine I was trying to use it in. I think they need to retrain some midgets.
