Anyone know good camping around San Diego

I've got a friend coming down here to San Diego in a couple of weeks and we decided that we want to go camping. Problem is, I've never been camping around here. We thought about Joshua Tree, but kinda decided against it because it might be too hot. This will kinda be like our first date, so I want to make it really nice and enjoyable.

So any ideas? I know of Cuyamaca, Cleveland National Forest, and Idlewild, but I'd like to stay away from the desert.

Thanks!

There are some campgrounds along the coast in south Carlsbad-I mean right on the coast too. I have no idea about availability though.

Whatever you do, don't ride a bike around Camp Pendleton. The Marines there have been known to shoot cyclists off their bikes for cheap entertainment and for taunting them.

Lies. I've ridden through Pendleton a few times on my bike. 😛

You got lucky. Plus I wasn't around. 😀

San Clemente State Beach is really nice.

But San Onofre is not a good camping situation.

That campground up atop the Ortega Highway from San Juan Capistrano, ast the hot springs up & over the mountain to Lake Elsinor is nice, because of great rock formations to scramble on.

Edit: ANd from there you can drive the dirt road back to Tenaja waterfalls, and even camp in there. I've done that a few times. Lots of water flows year round, golden salamanders in the creek, great rock formations. That puts you on the back side and elevated above Camp Pendelton.

If you're surfing, San Miguel beach at the north edge of Ensanada is OK, safe, showers at the trailer park across the parking lot.
