Anyone know cost to repair Traction Control on a '01 IS300??

Someone is selling (locally) a '01 IS300 on Craigslist for $12k. 38k miles, 18" rims, in-dash DVD.

Cons are, it needs paint due to a body kit that is on it (actually looks good, not a ricer kit) and the TC is non working.

I've emailed the guy asking if it's got a clean title. Obviously, that's the kicker.

But I'm curious as to how much it would cost to repair the TC.

edit: just got a response. salvage title 🙁

Depends on the reason it doesn't work. A good driver doesn't need it--it really only helps if you don't know what you're doing, and it will slow you down overall, but you obviously want it.

The big issue now is the salvage title. If you're not a half decent mechanic, avoid the car altogether.

If it's got a body kit, it was probably driven pretty hard and on top of that is a salvage? I wouldn't trust it. Really, the only salvages I'd trust are ones I worked on myself.

As for the TC being broken, I'd consider that a big, big plus (from personal experience, I test drove one).

Meanwhile, Automobile Magazine just published a cheat on how to turn off the TC on a Lexus GS430:

1. Make sure the car is in Park and the parking brake is disengaged before you start the car.
2. Start the engine.
3. Engage the parking brake.
4. Fully depress the brake pedal and then release.
5. Fully depress the brake pedal and then release.
6. Disengage the parking brake.
7. Fully depress and hold down the brake pedal.
8. Engage the parking brake, then disengage it (while holding down the brake pedal).
9. Engage the parking brake, then disengage it (while holding down the brake pedal).
10. Release the brake pedal.
11. Engage the parking brake.
12. Fully depress the brake pedal and then release.
13. Fully depress the brake pedal and then release.

When ?Check VSC? is displayed in the multifunction display along with the ?Trac-off? icon indicator, you?ll know that you have successfully completed the procedure.

God bless individual initiative!

i thought there has always been a button to turn off traction control (VSC) on all the lexus.... are you talking about the 06 ones?

and fixing the TC can range from $50-$500, depends on what is broken.
