i have a hard time encouraging her because i dont know much about the industry and to me it seems like a much more competetive industry where the average pay is gonna be tons lower than say... a comp sci grad.

anyhow... anyone know anybody in the industry who is doing good/bad ¿

If it's what she loves and really wants to do, a good fashion education is a great way to start in the business. You're right though, she will be making very little, probably for a long time. 2 of my close friends work at Nicole Miller in NYC and a few others for other designers...they enjoy their work for the most part, but it can be tough at times (long hours) and the pay is crap.

Unless she is balls to the wall about fashion, your intuition is correct. OTOH, how's she supposed to know til she tries it.

Or she might just dump you and date a millionare.

The £££ will be p!ss poor for ages. It may improve if she catches the eye of a fashion house.

Good luck!

Only if shes REALLY good at it. More than half the girls that get into fashion fail because of the competition and too much stress trying to compete with very talented people. Only the top 5-10% get into notable clothes companies and make decent money.

I don't see the relevance of your comp sci comment. Was your girlfriend working as computer scientist? Was she getting her masters in CS? And then she switched to fashion? If not, then you could say you probably don't make as say a CEO. Quit your job.

not easy at all. if you're lucky you might be able to catch the eye of a Buyer but it's not easy. What I would recommend is going in handbags, those always sell for $$$

she switched from business to fashion... i shoulda said business i guess?

anyhow i'm trying to make the point that you're taking a risk, possibly earning 30k a year for the next 5-6 years after you graduate before some fashion company discovers you (if ever). comp sci grads or any other common major like business/econ/etc offers a higher chance for employment with decent starting pay. anyhow i'm saying her new focus is a risky approach. yeah i'm conservative, i'd be satisfied if we got married and both easily made decent income.

If she is lucky.

Just think... once she's designing for Victoria Secret, you'll get invites to the fashion shows. SCORE!
