Friend just got a Nikon N55.
Needs a 300mm and at least a 500mm (or more).

Something half way decent, price is important.

I think lirion is the guru of all things photo, or at least he has a bunch of equipment and knows how to use it.

Sorry, I can't help you. "Lens" only has one 'e'.

:D Just kidding. But $300 dollars isn't much for lens in the 300mm to 500mm range. There's this. That's not too fast, but it is very cheap. 1.4x teleconverters aren't too expensive, and it would get her to 420mm f/8, which would be pretty much useless in all but full sun. AF probably won't work at f/8 either. They also have this. It's no faster, but is probably built better and might be a little better optically. Hit the used stores and check eBay, she might find a deal.

There's no 500mm lens worth having for $300 I'm affraid.

Hope she gets what she wants. She's very talented.

For her uses, since the photo isn't the final output, might a compact digital with some freakish amount of zoom be better? Since she'll be reproducing the image on canvas anyway, photo quality from the camera isn't that important, and it would probably be cheaper than buying more lenses.

Sigma makes a 50-500mm lens for nikon mounts, thing weighs like 6 lbs, and its not cheap here

Nikon makes a 400mm tele but it costs like 5000$ and you could lkill someone with it and it wouldent take a dent its the one seen here

other then the ones lirion mentioned there arnt may choices especially with that buget, I have a 70-300 f/4-5.6 and its fine if there is good light, and the two lenses lirion listed are identicial the ED and G versions differ vary little, its basically te hsame lens, one has a apature ring one doesnt

other option include the Nikon AF VR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D and the Nikon AF Nikkor 300mm f/4 ED-IF with a 1.4 TC
