anyone know anything about refrigerators?

I'll give you my limited knowledge. There are 2 major kinds that I know of top/bottom and side by side.
Top/Bottom is simply fridge is on bottom, freezer is on top. They usually are the least expensive.
The side/side is fridge usually on the right and freezer on the left.
A lot of fridges will have an icemaker.
Some side by sides will take it further and have an ice dispenser and a cold water dispenser.
My parents have a side by side with an ice and cold water dispenser. I think it's a frigidaire.
Where I live there is a top/bottom Amana with nothing extra.
My parent's fridge has been going for over 15 years, no idea how long the one here has been going.
If you can find an honest appliance dealer they can be pretty helpful

depends on how much she want's to spend glenn. (pretty obvious i guess)

but heres the lowdown, if she want's to spend less than 1000, i'd just go w/ that energy saving thing that shows how a certain refrigerator at a cubic size rates vs other refrigerators for energy efficiency. you know what i mean right? you see them stuck on the refrigerators at all the stores.

if she is willing to spend more than $1000.00 than the thing to look for are the cabinet type refrigerators.

basically here's what happens, as we all know, heat rises. so it would seem most logical to place coldest component on the bottom and the hottest component on the top. that isn't what happens w/ most refrigerators. what you usually see is the compressor unit on the bottom, then heavy duty insulation, than the freezing unit on top. very inefficient.

the best refrigerators have the freezer unit on the bottom and the main refrigeration unit in the middle and the compressor on top.

they are hard to find and on the more expensive side.

hope this helps in some small way.

Tell your sister to go to Sears, they have the best selection, usually best prices and some great warranties.

My family has bought nothing but Kenmore (rebadged Whirlpool) which is Sears own brand name, they're also highly rated in Consumer Reports magazine.

Also consider Maytag.

If your sister doesn't currently have a Sears credit card, if she applies she can receieve up to 10% off her first purchase and sometimes no interest/no payments for up to 1 year.

All I know is most of them last damn near forever these days, so get the right size, and follow the big yellow energy guide.

Also some utility companies/cities offer incentives ($50-$200 off) if you buy an energy efficient fridge, which most of them are.

Does your sister have a Sears near her?

Refrigerated food for thought:

Amana Easy Reach Plus Refrigerator

Amana Appliances Launches Easy Reach Plus Refrigerator
  • "...Research has also shown that the average person uses the fresh food section of their refrigerator up to seven times more often than the freezer, so it only makes sense to put the fresh food section at eye level. No more bending and squinting to find things like that long lost zucchini you bought six months ago.
I'd never seen one of these before, but the first time I did, I knew it was going to be in our home. I liked the idea of freezer on the bottom, but the swing open doors make it a pain to get at them. This slide out drawer takes care of all that. Pricey, yes, but our last refrigerator lasted over 20 years. If this one lasts that long, I want it to be a great one... and it is! 😉
