i plugged a phone into the jack right outside the house (network interface device) and it works fine, so it's something IN the house.

In the house, the DSL works fine but i get NO dial tone. if the DSL is work, i'm going to bet here that it CAN'T be a physical line problem, because as far as i know both signals come over the same physical line.

i've called the phone company and they will send someone out wednesday between 8 am to 6 pm.

anyway, i think it's something in the house but i have no clue what. i tried unplugging everything plugged into a phone jack and leaving it out for 20 minutes and plugging one phone back it, nothing.

if anyone has any additional ideas, i'd appreciate it.

Have you tried just plugging the phone right into the DSL jack?

FoBoT has the best suggestion I would say though.

ya. that doesn't work.

neither did changing the filters, unless verizon screwed up and changed the frequencies that need to be filtered. :(

You want to test your phone without the DSL filters in place just to eliminate that as a potential cause.

You also want to make sure you try different phones, in case the phone is the culprit.

well, then you can either wait for the repair dude, or jack around with it
take the cover off of every outlet and check the wires, sometimes they come off the posts and short out
otherwise you have to try to trace all the wires and see if you can split them out and isolate the branch causing the problem

without dsl filters, i get nothing.

why would it work outside the house and not inside the house?

this doesn't make any sense tho. if it was shorting somewhere, why would DSL still work? just because dsl works on different frequencies doesn't mean it can overcome a short.

the fact that dsl works is what's really confusing me, if dsl didn't work either, i wouldn't have a problem having the repair guy come in and do his thing, the fact that dsl does work tho, makes me think there is something i can do to fix it. :(

You need to check the line after it enters the house.

You should have a terminal block or two screwss with the wire on it.

Bad connection there and you are all screwed up ;)

ok, so i fixed it. some wires were loose inside the primary jack where the phone line comes into the house.

i like an idiot was looking for the primary connection to be close to where the wire came into the house, NOPE, it was in the jack in the kitchen.

anyway, the guy that originally wired the house did a sh1t job. the kitchen jack, when he plugged it into the box, he only screwed in the BOTTOM. fvcker, and this is one of those jacks that you hang phones off of. :(, needless to say, over the years as phones where hung on this thing the top came bending down.

anyway, i resecured all the lines into the posts and screwed the jack back into the box (being careful to screw the TOP in and not the bottom, yes, i know there should be two screws, i don't have any that size so i have to go to home depot and get some) and voila, it all works.

thx ATOT for the help, except Ktulu who was no help at all.
