anyone have any info on this? it's supposedly a new audio compression (like mp3) that is opensourced which means there are no licensing fees and has better compression and audio quality then MP3's. Has anyone tried making any audio files using this format? IF so, how does it sound?

It sounds good. It has been around for a while now. Truthfully it doesn't really offer much over MP3s. Yes it sounds a little better but not work the trouble. Hell VQF files sounded better than MP3s 3 years ago but never got big.

I only encode my CDs in Ogg Vorbis format. Why?

1. It sounds better. I realize this is subjective.
2. The files are a bit smaller. A bit. Probably the same as a VBR mp3
3. The format is public domain and most (all?) of the tools are GPLed.
4. It's fun to be different!

It's not a 1.0 yet, so I'll probably have to reencode my CDs. I've only had
one problem with the whole deal. One of my songs (Tommorrow by Ozzy) got cut
off mysteriously after about 1:20. Dunno why.

Actually .ogg files do sound better than mp3, especially with lower bitrates.

With the same bitrates, the files (.ogg and .mp3) should be the same size.

Weird, I got 2 extra seconds added after I compressed a song first in mp3 and then in ogg vorbis. 3:26 for the mp3 vs. 3:28 for the .ogg file 😕
