Anyone know anything about moving businesses or insurance?

So, a friend of mine, Vanessa, has a boyfriend named Chris. He works for a moving company and he was moving a stove, put it down on a hardwood floor during the moving by accident and caused some damage, apparently $1300 worth. He is apparently expected to pay for it out of his own pocket.

The first thing I thought of was "shouldn't there be insurance coming into play?"

Wouldn't the moving company have insurance in case of accidents, that are more than likely to occur sooner or later?

*NOTE* it damaged the floor, not the stove.

State Labor Laws cover this.
In most cases an employee cannot be forced to pay for accidental damage.
HOWEVER, the company can accept "fault", cover the bill, then deduct from his pay.
An Independant Contractor better have real insurance or he's hosed.

IANAL, but IMHO it absolutely should be covered by the insurance.

This is what I've heard numerous, numerous times as well. He should not have to pay out of pocket if he was working for somebody else.

Each state is different so check state law on it.

But most have rules saying you can't hold a employee libel for damage if done while on duty and was not intentional.
