I was watch Law and Order SVU.

They were talking about the term Down Low, which is group of black men would have a poker game and they would have sex with each other.

They don't even talk about it, they just do it with each other. Every men has family with kids, but once a week they would get together and have sex..

I'm guessing that this happens more often for them to have a phrase Down Low..

I believe R.Kelly coined the term..

In one of this songs as well as in his own private life involving clandestine rendevous with minors.

Actually, there's a new book out on that very subject. Was reviewed in our local paper last Sunday. It's about "straight" black men who have sex with other men.

Yeah I saw that episode. Also there was an article in my school newspaper discussing the fact that a surprising number of black students on campus live the "DL" lifestyle.

I think straight is quoted because it implies that they masquerading as hetero.

The terms contradict each other.

It's not limited to poker players/poker games, but the term does mean someone who lives a double life -- publicly straight, but does have homosexual encounters with like-minded individuals (also living on the DL). They don't usually consider themselves anything other than hetero.

What a bunch of weak-willed individuals.
It's a bit more complicated than that.

Good op/ed piece on the "down low".

From your article

"In black America, that sort of denial is fueled by a rampant homophobia. With black preachers denouncing homosexuality from the pulpits and black families shunning gay sons, few gay black men are out of the close"

" As long as black homosexuality lives in the shadows and denial hovers in the air, HIV will continue to stalk black America"

Thus not only are they hiding their prefrences from themselves and their loved ones, they also endanger their community. Not communicating who you are only make this problem worse.
I understand what is like to come out of the closet in a religous family. I saw my favorite uncle get shunned by my bigoted family when he came out. But you know what I love him even more for having a pair bigger than I ever will.I maintain my original statement.

So you see my point, which is that there's a reason this is happening. Not saying it's okay (for either half of the equation) though.
