So, the other day, I got a v60g. It was doing odd things, it would have a high signal, 4 or 5 bars, and then suddenly drop to nothing for a couple of seconds before going back up, often right as a call was being made to it. When it would happen then, the call would not come through. A few people on the howard forums have said that this is something similar to a problem some startacs used to have, they would literally freeze for a few seconds, which definetly seems to be the case with this. With it missing so many calls, I decided to box it up and return it. I took the battery out, etc, just like it comes when you buy it.

Tonight though, I decided to try it again. Now, its working great, its ringing every time its called, and the signal is staying steady and strong, just like it should be in my area. Anyone have any ideas whats caused the difference? Normally I would say maybe it was voicestream acting up, but I was flipping between the v60, and my 3390 the other night, and it wasn't having any kind of problems. I REALLY like the phone, but I'm worried it will do it again.

So, anyone have any ideas?

That sounds really strange. I have a StarTAC and sometimes it jumps from 1-2 bars up to 5 bars for a few seconds but I have never seen it go the other way.

It's most likely your service provider's fault.

GSM may be a fine technology, but is doesn't have any good providers in the states yet. (I think CDMA has greater technical capabilities anyway, based on my reading.)

GSM is the only way to go. It's great technology. In fact, AT&T has seen the light and is converting (eventually) their entire network over to GSM.

I'm using an 8290 with VoiceStream here and it is great. You'll find reception on various phones to vary significantly. I expected this 8290 to be terrible indoors and the like when I got it, but it actually gets better reception than the 5190 I was using before it. I'd look for a different phone before blaming the network or the provider :)
