Anyone know an IRC server that uses Port 80? Machine for SETI if i can!

Confused

My mate is at uni now, and wants to connect to IRC for talking. He can't use MSN etc, so wants to use IRC.

He cannot use anything like HTTP Tunneler, or any other things like that, he'll get kicked off network.

I was thinking of an IRC server that uses Port 80. He said if i can get him onto IRC he'll run Seti on his machine for me 🙂 Will probably be on 24/7 as well (XP1800 🙂)

Thanks in advance

Thanks for the link Ray,

He tried that, but didn't like it at all (fussy, i know 😉)

So bump for any IRC servers that use Port 80 (he really wants to use mIRC like he did before he left, cos he's got that set up just how he wants 🙂)

Confused, search for a program called BNC (BouNCer)
you can set it up on one of your machines, to use port 80... (if using linux, it will need to be run as root, iirc)

this program acts as a proxy, all data sent to the program (running on port 80, in this situation) is forwarded to the IRC server... and data sent from the IRC server, bounces through your BNC server, and sends it on to the client

so, using this program... it looks to your friends copy of mirc like the irc server is running on port 80 of your machine
he can choose which network to connect to, using /raw commands

I think it will work good for you and him 😛

I dont think any server uses port 80 for IRC server. Most of them uses 6667 - 6669.
I didnt understand very well whats the problem, he cant conect to other ports besides port 80?
I know there are those webchats, not the IRC using java scripts, etc.
These webchats doesnt work for him?

Nope, he can't use anything like AIM, MSN, ICQ etc. The uni has blocked almost every single port (including these) as well as all the standard IRC ports, other than port 80, and i know that port 5001 is open cos he can get to my SetiQueue, and hence he said if i can find him an IRC server using port 80 and it works, he'll run Seti 24/7 on his 1800+
