Friend has a older Evenrude Triumph(spelling) 60hp motor. Sounds good and revs up good while in neutral. But once you put it in gear it starts to go good but doesn't go as fast as it should. Its not revving up as much as it is in neutral. What could be causing this? Carb need adjusted maybe?

Its like the its either getting to much gas and is bogging down or ain't getting enough. Friend doesnt know much about boat motors nor do I. He knows a bit about cars though and says the air screws on the carb may need adjusted.

I used to work on some of the older Mercury outboards, the principles are the same though. On the older ones many times the crankcase would start to suck air. The whole system is based on crankcase pressure or lack there of. Any easy way to check is take some starting fluid and along the seam were the crankcase is bolted together spray a little bit with it running. hold it close so it doesn't get sucked into the carbs. If it is leaking here then it needs resealed. If it is newer this shouldn't be a problem. I haven't done this in a while.

Outboards are a bytch to diagnose. Could be a card issue, but why is it okay in neutral ? Could be a clutch problem too. I replaced a cone clutch on a Volvo outdrive once. The gear was not engaging correctly. Sorry that I am not more helpfull.
