My dryer is not getting hot, I pulled the back off and found this piece at the bottom that looks messed up. I noticed the metal wire is not attached to the contact anymore

we have the same drier.

that's a thermostat.

is yours a whirlpool too?

your's has already had the superseded part put in.

check the continuity of the heater and if it is ok change the thermostat,.

took a second look at the top pic.

the element broke.
 
in your first pic the metal coil that is busted off the metal connectro that attaches to the red wire is the heater for the dryer.

since the element is broken that's why it wont heat up.

you can try re-attaching it but it may fail again.
 
Is this part a common failure? I have another dryer in my shop that will not heat, maybe that is what is wrong. What would cause that to break?
 
yes, the metal spring action that keeps the pressure up weakens. Then the resistance goes up, the amps go up, and it gets worse, fast. once it gets hot enough the corrosion accelerates which in turn sends the amps up. FFFFT!
 
I pulled the back off the other dryer I have and tested continuity on different parts. I found a thermal fuse was bad, I almost sold that to a guy for 20 bucks a few weeks back, glad I didnt know
 
I don't think I'd say the thermal fuse is "bad." I'd say that the thermal fuse was tripped. Before you replace that $3.50 thermal fuse, watch a youtube video or two on how to disassemble your dryer, and spend the half hour doing so and removing all lint.

Don't take a chance that a thermal fuse tripped for shits and giggles; they're there to protect you.
 
Looks like I'll be taking mine apart when I get home. Quit heating yesterday. I'm guessing it's 10 years old so it's not like I can hurt it.
 
Had to pull the drum out and the element is fine🙄...struggled to get the belt back on and then sat on my glasses. 😡 and I took it out on the dryer. Angerment issues, my kid would say. Now I get a new dryer and possibly new glasses. Yeah.🙄
