Do they use the same power supply? Like if i have adsl there, can i just buy a linksys for whatever
soho router here in the US and plug it in there and configure it to work?

who provides dsl there?

continental europe (at least the western part) uses all the same style plugs, they are 2 or 3 prong, the sockets are recessed. they are round

they are 220/240 volt, 50 hertz
almost all pc's and laptop power supplies are compatible, but need plug converters which you can get at radio shack

for something like a router, you would probably need a brick for 240/whatever the voltage is for the router. you could get a new brick over there at a local computer/electronics shop. or you might just want to buy a router when you get there.

Hey, just got your PM 🙂
I don't understand your question? In Switzerland, I think we have 220V or 240V, not sure but on the Power supplies(for computers), there's always a switch to change to 115 or 130 IIRC. OK, you have ADSL in Switzerland and you want to buy a Linksys Router in America and configure it? Yeah, I'm sure that will work, you might need a transformer though for the correct Voltage.

We have a couple ADSL providers here in Switzerland but I would get Cable if it's possible, they're faster and cheaper.

No, definately not. My parents lived in Switzerland for about a year and I had the priviledge of visiting for a little over a month. If there is one thing I know about Switzerland it is that virtually none of our electrical equipment can be used over there and it is very difficult to find the right kind of converters for hairdryers let alone routers/hubs.

nah i'm not going...just someone in the office is gonna live there and was wondering how to
setup their systems. they are clueless about networking etc so i guess its better they buy a router
there and maybe call up someone there to set it up for them?

is that whats usually done for clueless peeps?

what about power supplies for notebooks? she is bringing over there 2 IBM laptops...do they work..just plugin? or she needs to go buy a special power supply?

pyonir 😀

I think the thing between power connector and notebook is a transformer, no? You can virtually plug everything in there IIRC. Where will they be located? I maybe could set the router up for them if it's not too far away 🙂

If she is going over there for work she should have someone at her place of employement help her get setup properly. Regardless, I would make certain all her data is backed up here in the US in case her hard drives get fried. Wish I could be more help but it has been nearly 6 years since I have been over there and to be honest I didn't pay much attention to the specifics regarding their electricity.

yeah, check out http://www.stegcomputer.ch , they have about the best prices and I'm sure you will find a router 🙂

WTH!? ndee, you are the next syringer! You have the opportunity to go and install a router...then "install" something else, and you are going to pass it up because it is a little drive? 😕

😉😛
