Anyone know about smoke alarms?

Mine keeps going off every now and then, beeps for about 10-15 seconds and almost exactly at the same time - an ungodly 3AM in the morning!

I've already had the fire department check on the first time it went off. Also cleaned it using a can of compressed air and even changed the batteries. But it still goes off on me.

Haven't had problems like this since it was installed (about 4 months ago).

Anyone know what could be wrong? I can't just disconnect it either since it seems to be wired into the home and taking out the battery just makes it beep constantly every 10 seconds.

"Fix" it with a hammer, then get one that uses a 9-volt and isn't wired into the ceiling.

By the way, if it uses a battery it wouldn't be wired into the house it seems to me, unless, of course, you have some sort of alarm system...

Simple as that huh? Is there some sort of special requirement when looking at replacement detectors? I've only seen those battery operated one's in Target/Walmart.

Thanks for the responses :) If anyone else knows what could be wrong with it please post.

I pulled mine off the cieling, pulled the battery out, and set it on a shelf where it's been for months.

I do have an alarm system but only 1 is being monitored, the other 3 (which keeps going off) is wired in to something but is not monitored. It also has 9V batteries in it.

That's a good way to prevent a fire. Although I suppose you can sue the detector manufacturer because their product technically failed to help prevent the fire.... ;)

Battery is a fail-safe in case the power goes out.

code around here on new houses need a hardwired detector with a battery backup. so the hard wired part is probably 110v, get a fluke and test see if the leads have power going to them

my battery operated one started doing that same thing after about 6 months. I changed the battery and it was fine.

Get a new one. They're not very expensive. I think First Alert is the biggest name, and AFAIK, they work fine. Honeywell also probably still makes them, and I'm sure they're fine too. It's best not to mess around with a defective smoke detector, and just replace it.

I guess the battery is for back-up then. I'll see if i can grab a tester on my way home.

Thanks again for the quick responses :)
