I don't know a whole lot about comforters (bedding in general) I would like to buy a silk, or silk like (satin?) white, king sized comforter for under 300$ if possible. I'd like it to be full, or rather thick... anyone have a clue as to where i should look?

I found a few on froogle...does anyone know about these? not sure if they're quality or how to know if there gonna be to thin....

Do you mean something like a White Goose Down Comforter?

Link

Thread counts can vary, with the higher the thread count being more soft(?)

I've never heard of a silk comforter. Silk/Satin sheets, on the other hand.....

I use one and love it. Silk-filled comforters are lighter than equivalent down comforters. In other words, a down comforter made for winter is much heavier than a silk comforter. They're also supposed to be hypo-allergenic.

They are made by stretching lots of silk fibers into "large sheets", and then stacking the "sheets" in many layers. Down comforters must have pockets to keep all the down from bunching up on one end of the comforter, but silk comforters don't have this problem. Also, with down/fill, you can get feather pins sticking through the fabric. There's no equivalent problem with silk.

They are largely unknown in the U.S., but more popular in Asia, from what I've seen. PM me for more information. I have several queen size (220 x 240 cm (86 x 94 in) ) winter silk comforters for sale too.

The only major issue with silk comforters is cleaning. We had a silk comforter, and dry cleaning it cost something like $85. Dry cleaning our down comforter costs less than half that. As for comfort, silk has down beat, but considering it is such a PITA to clean I would go with down just for convenience sake. Not to mention that down comforters can be significantly cheaper.

From what I've seen and read, the cheaper down comforters contain more "fill" (i.e. pin feathers) and less down. They also use a lower thread count, which means that the down and feathers leak out. Silk doesn't have this problem.

I bought my premium silk comforters in China, and the prices were a lot cheaper there than most cheap down comforters here.

My local dry cleaner charges ~$26.

Also, I should point out that I'm talking about silk-filled comforters with a cotton shell. I've also seen cotton-filled (or other material) comforters with a silk shell. I actually use a silk duvet with my comforter.

/end sales talk :p
