anyone know about NAS?

where does it say it shares the applications?
i see file sharing info, like any NAS (where i work we use Quantum Snap Servers)

looks to me like a PC running a custom linux distro

ok, the web site must have been done by marketing weasels

in one place it says
(SPECT?-NAS can act as a Server that application software can be shared) .

and then in the next paragraph it says

While a NAS device does a lot of good things for storage, it is not designed to run with a great deal of processing power. That job is for the server. A NAS exists to serve up files, not to run programs.

i don't know, have you checked out the Martian NetDrive Wireless?

Hello Mr. Ex-Navy Nuclear or related fields personnel, many thanks for your great inputs! Pls look at the

Do you think that they're trying to announce SPECT-NAS is different than a regular NAS out there? I don't know... but the price is very attractive as a cheap user! By-the-way, what class and duty stations were you served in the US Navy? Great to have YOU served our country! God bless America!

The Navy rocks.

I think what they are talking about with sharing application software is simply a "run from server" kind of setup, not an actuall application running ON the server.

A lot of apps can be run from a shared network drive. Some easily, some with some configuration fooling.

I'm sure this thing would NOT make a good application server but would be just fine if you ran applications FROM it.

You want real NAs perofrmance and uptime, then buy a real one.

EMC or IBM or Hitachi...something like that.
You just need storage..get a Quantum or some other Maxtor snap on drive.

I bought an EMC Fiber Channel 4700 at work, 1/2 a terabyte of space, RAID-5.
Very nice but VERY expensive.

or you could do what i do.... make my own little Shuttle NAS boxes.

with one 80gb drive, i can build it for less than $400, and it has soo much more configurability than any of those cheaper Quantum Snap Servers or Linksys Gigadrives.

also, it is quite a neat project to do, to get a nice hang of it as well, which can be done quite nicely even on older computers.
