Anyone know about 4L on part time 4WD vehicles (toyotas?)

I've got a 4WD toyota truck that is part time 4WD and I wanted to know if you guys knew anything about entering 4L or not. I was testing out 4L yesterday and I had quite an issue with it. I first put the car in neutral (which is apparently not required?) then shifted into 4Hi, then I swiveled the stick around (like the pattern on the shifter) into neutral then I move it into 4L. The car didn't move forward, I dunno why but maybe it was because it was actually still in neutral. Anyways I tried moving it back into 4Hi so that I could put it in 2Hi again but when I tried the shifter vibrated, grinding on the gears :shocked: I tried this about 3 times, reading the manual and everything, the manual only detailed shifting INTO 4L but not out of it. So finally I turned off the car, and I was able to shift out and back into 2Hi.

Is this suppose to happen? wtf?

What year is your truck? Did you lock the front hubs, if it has manual hubs? Sounds like you never got it into 4L. Why do you have 4WD if you don't even know how to use it?

Thats why I thought I should 'learn' how to use it. Plus, I believe all of my knowledge applies to old 4WD american vehicles... It's a 2007 model, so yeah it's new.

You probably need to roll forward a bit so the teeth can engage. But that would require that you actually have it shifted to 4L and not still in neutral.

1) shift a little quicker next time
2)try bouncing the gearshift off of park for a second. in my jeep in certain situations the transmission output/transfercase input can keep coasting for a few seconds right after you shift into neutral.
3) transfercases usually don't have syncros so sometimes you need to roll forward/back a few inches when shifting from high/low to else it will fight you to get in/out of gear.

What is the pattern for your 4wd?

On my 01 Jeep Cherokee, it's
2WD->4HI->N->4LO
I have to stop, shift to neutral (it's an auto tranny), then go to 4LO. For 4HI I just have to pull and sometimes let up off the gas.

I have a Toyota truck that has part time 4WD. I had the same problem you did when I first got the car. The solution is to be more "quick" and smooth with your shifting. I also never put the vehicle into N before shifting into 4WD. You also may have to put the vehicle in reverse to disengage the 4WD after you have shifted back to 2WD.

mine is an 88.......lock down the front hubs, put the car in N, clutch down, and then shift to 4h and then to 4l........done. that's how i do it
