I am not too saavy on the iPhone, my wife wants one, but she communicates in Japanese. Her friend was able to get a sim card here to use her's, but I am not sure if there was any limitations on what you can do.

Thanks

Why do you want the JP iPhone? They're the same thing except for default region set as Japan (which you can change through menu on any iPhone). Is there anything specific? Wanting factory unlocked iPhone/etc?

If that's the case then it's a no brainer. When I was looking for a laptop for her many said just change the keyboard layout in the regional menu in Windows, however...the Japan keyboard is totally different and without the symbol on the keys she would have a hard time.

Fortunately Apple let her order a Macbook configured for Japan.

If the iPhone isn't so tied to the region then that would work.

Hot Japanese wife eh... :hmm:

It's pretty easy to change. Go into the settings app. Scroll down and select "General", then scroll down to the bottom to where it says international.

There you can change the keyboard, language, and regional date/time formats to any language/country you want.

If it's like my iPad, not all the language is changed. Also you use the american 'keyboard' to type...it works fine, but not the same as a true Japanese keyboard.

She's been using my iPad like that and it's good, but not the same.

Do you mean input via an actual Japanese-type keyboard or the Romaji-type input like the Windows IME? -- iPhone, I don't believe have a custom regional builds, they all have the same input methods. The two japanese input methods in the iPhone (As of iOS4) is input via qwerty (romaji) and input via Keitai-like (pushing a button multiple times to get the corresponding character).

yeah...not looking for romaji style or that Keitai-like one. Looking for a true Japanese style input keyboard. My iPad supports romaji. You can switch the keyboard layout QWERTY, AZERTY, etc, but it's still english characters.

Anyone know if they make them that way in Japan or if it's going to be the same thing either way.

It works, but it's not the same.
