For those who use popup stoppers.........does the popup ad show up for a split second, and then close automatically? Or is it completely blocked?

Since I've switched to Mozilla, I have yet to see a single pop-up. They just don't happen. Not "pop-up and immediately closed" they just never happen.

Wow, just tried Crazybrowser and I have to say, I'm impressed. It's awesome and it's freeware w/ no spyware. Best. Add-on. Ever. (And a Must-have for IE).

I do have one complaint, but, I can workaround it... the favorites are auto-sorted alphabetically. Which is fine, except the root I like sorted my way... IE doesn't autosort it. The benefits far outway that minor inconvenience.

<--- Very Happy I read this thread today.
😀

Another vote for the proxomitron - although it works great (and automatically allows popups to open that you actually click on yourself) there was one popup or two that it did not stop for some reason - and it was the most annoying one I have ever seen. It was large and did not have any close button on it at all. It just sat there with a timer on it saying "this window will close in 40 seconds..." I don't even remember what the ad was for. I know the proxomitron has some sort of "do not allow anything from these domains" type feature. I'll have to look into that.

I have used popup stopper from panicware but things got screwed up after a week of usage. Everytime i click on a new window link, it gets minimized and the only way to see it was to maximize the window in toolbar <----very annoying. I can't figure out a way to solve this problem other than format c:? 🙁

The proxomitron stops popups before they occur.

Damn, I have the same thing happen as Jeff1 (above) has happen. Anyone know why ?

I have just installed Webwasher, which seems to be highly regarded, and besides changing my brower default from IE 6 to Netscape 6.2 , (which don't mind at all) , now, when IE 6 launches, it takes a good minute (yes, 60 seconds) or more to show the default page (Google). Once in IE6, I can go to other links and pages with speed, but cannot launch a NEW instance of IE 6 without the long wait, again. This long wait does not happen with Netscape 6.2, regardless of how many instances of Netscape are launched.
Any explanation that you can come up with ?

Forces me to uninstall Webwasher. Would sure like to know the workaround on this...

Proximotron is best if you have the patience and knowledge to configure it.

For those who want a simple and effective solution to blocking popups, get Mozilla from mozilla.org. Netscape is basically a bloated version of mozilla. Mozilla allows you to:

1. Disable "open unrequested windows": no unwanted popups, while still allowing you to click on links that pop up.

2. Disable "move or resize existing windows" : I hate it when a web site resizes my window to fill the screen. It messes up the default window size. If I wanted a page to take up my screen, I'd maximize it myself.

3. Disable "raise or lower windows"

4. Disable "hide the status bar" and "change status bar text": For sites that like to hide the real links with other text.

And more...

Having these functions built into the browser is more efficient than running a separate program.

If you want to be able to disable "open unrequested windows" in IE, Meaya's Popup Ad killer handles in the same manner as Mozilla does (disabling the javascript code for unrequested popups). But it's shareware. One advantage it has is that it allows you to specify sites to exclude, thus allowing you to get popups from sites that you want it from. IE really should have these sort of options as well.

CrazyBrowser looks interesting...I'll have to give it a try. Any other reliable, non-resource hogging popup stoppers that work by the same method as Mozilla employs?

I just gave CrazyBrowser a test run and it's an excellent shell for IE! And it's freeware too.

It gives me the ability to have tabbed windows like in Mozilla, and it comes with a built-in Smart Popup blocker which I assume works in the same way as the one in Mozilla and Maeya's PopUp Ad Filter for IE. And it has a bunch of other cool features. 🙂

Thanks to the person who suggested it!
