I'm thinking of renting a 300 or 400mm for an airshow next month.

I was googling and found one place, and went to what they had to rent and laughed:

Product Daily Rate One-Week Rate
Canon EOS Elan II E $25.00 $100.00
Canon EOS Rebel S Body $15.00 $60.00
Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6IS $30.00 $120.00
Canon EF 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 $15.00 $60.00
Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro $20.00 $80.00
Nikon SB-28 DX Flash $15.00 $60.00
Nikon 70-300mm ED AF-S 4.5-5.6 G VR $30.00 $120.00

I'm scared though....that I'll like it too much and well...I don't need to buy one because I'd rarely use it.

They have online by-mail rental companies, though I've never used one and wouldn't know which is best beyond googling.

Only rent the 400mm f/2.8 if you're big and strong, or have a monopod to hold it for you. The 300mm f/2.8 is fine for handholding. But I do recommend renting one of the exotic telephoto primes from Canon or Nikon to see what all the fuss is about sometime in your life.
Hint: the fuss is 100% deserved, especially when paired with a pro body.

I have a monopod and I'd even use it with my 70-200 f/2.8 IS at an airshow - why not?

I know Adorama rents stuff but not sure on pricing. Was hoping a local place might be able to beat them. I'll have to check them out.

I've rented a 70-200 2.8 IS from lensrentals.com, for about $50/week. Shipping is about $40 though and includes return shipping.

I ordered it for a week starting on a Friday, I actually placed the order that monday and got it Wed, so I had an extra few days to play with it.
