Anyone know a decent/cheap way to capture output from Xbox 360?

This idea started while playing Rock Band and everyone agreeing that we'd like to have some of the loading screens of our band as our desktop wallpaper. 😛 Admittedly, I don't have a terribly important reason for wanting to do it, but I figured it would be something fun to try.

Considering how PC-like today's consoles have become, it would be nice to be able to take snapshot screen captures while you're playing. I remember XBMC had that capability while my original Xbox was still functional.

So what are some ways capture HD video (or at least screenshots) of a console system? I imagine that most suggestions will be over what I'm willing to spend for my little, but maybe someone can humor me? I'll probably end up sitting on the couch with a digital camera reloading gigs over and over. 😛

Ya, no cheap way that I know of to capture HD versions of the loading screens. My TV has a way to freeze the screen, so if I can be of any help, let me know. I have a decently powered DSLR and I know how to use it, so I should be able to get some good, crisp pics. I can freeze the loading screen and snap away until I get it right.

Thanks a lot for the offer, but I imagine that (because of Rock Band's save system) not only would I have to ask you to recover my GamerTag on your system but I'd have to find a way to transfer our saved characters to you. This certainly isn't worth inconveniencing you or anyone else that badly.

I'll ask the other people that play RB with us regularly if they have a TV that has the same screen freezing feature you mentioned. That idea may come in handy, thanks.

HDMI transfers HDCP so I doubt you'll be able to get anything off that... I used to have an old ATI card that had a dongle allowing me to input SVideo and Composite, but that was long ago... maybe you can get some cheap card to do the same, or pick up a TV card.

I do have a Canopus ADVC110 (Composite and S-Video Inputs) that I bought earlier this year that I've been using to rip my parents' VHS home videos, but I was hoping to get an HD capture.

If I were to find a 360 VGA cable, do they make consumer-level video cards that take a VGA input? Seems like all the ones I find on NewEgg do not.

Thanks a lot for that option. I'm going to be getting an HD camcorder before our honeymoon to Hawaii this spring, so I may be interested in a capture card like that, anyway.

As for the purpose of this thread, my request has (hopefully) been answered by Harmonix with their Rock Band website update: Link

* Personal & Band Pages: ROCKBAND.com will automatically load your in-game characters and game stats from an online database so your personal profile page will always be up to date.

* Photo Creator: (Coming Soon!) Take the ultimate promo band or solo shot with the website's Photo Creator. Pick a location, the right lighting, and a coordinated (or not!) pose for your band. Take it over the top cheesy or seriously intense. It's all about your band's total image.

Hurray for mind-reading developers. 😛

It's a shame there's no way to get an HD signal (besides coax or antenna) onto a computer without expensive equipment.
