16GB 3GS 3.1.3, used Spirit, Windows 7 - worked like a charm. Easiest thing ever. It's literally download, launch, click - and you're ready! :D

There's three firmware versions on the iPhone:
bootrom - this is like the BIOS. it's set when you buy the iPhone and never upgrades.
baseband - this is the communication firmware for the CPU that handles all wireless information, including GSM and 3G.
main - this is the main OS for the CPU that drives the GUI and the OS.

Jailbreaks give you access to the main OS. Spirit just jailbreaks.
You can unlock if you are on the older 3.1.2 baseband (it has a different codename, but it's the baseband from the 3.1.1 and 3.1.2 firmware releases). You can also do an unlock of 3.1.3's baseband if you have one of the older bootroms by using snowbreeze.

i've used snowbreeze before i'm pretty sure. it asked me for 2 specific files i downloaded somewhere and loaded them. sound familiar? so i can take this 3.1.3 3gs with the latest baseband and use snowbreeze to install the older bootrom which will allow me to unlock it for any carrier?

You can't change bootroms on a 3GS. Whatever the phone has is what you have. Older versions have more security holes than the newer ones.

If you have a new iPhone 3GS - and I'm not sure how "new" is new - then it will have fixed the security holes that snowbreeze uses to gain access to the device, and you will be stuck.

question. just used spirit to unlock gf's 3.1.3 3gs iphone. it's been sitting at the little loadinf screen where it shows the little red warp hole background. been sitting here for about 5 minutes spinning the little loading circle. any idea? she had a lot of shit on there, maybe that's why? not sure what to do as my 3gs unlocked flawlessly in seconds..
