with the new bootrom? i've read that only the 3gs iphones with the older boot rom can be jailbroken. might be picking one up this week and am curious if they are jailbreakable or not?
There's three firmware versions on the iPhone:
bootrom - this is like the BIOS. it's set when you buy the iPhone and never upgrades.
baseband - this is the communication firmware for the CPU that handles all wireless information, including GSM and 3G.
main - this is the main OS for the CPU that drives the GUI and the OS.
Jailbreaks give you access to the main OS. Spirit just jailbreaks.
You can unlock if you are on the older 3.1.2 baseband (it has a different codename, but it's the baseband from the 3.1.1 and 3.1.2 firmware releases). You can also do an unlock of 3.1.3's baseband if you have one of the older bootroms by using snowbreeze.
