Anyone into ice skating?

I've really wanted to ice skate and eventually play some ice hockey. I haven't gone in years, but I rollerblade all the time. The only problem is that nearest ice rink has a $7 admission fee and $3 skate rental. $10 is a lot if you go often. Is this a reasonable price?

There's a figure skating club that I saw a flyer for. It seems more like a general ice skating club. One of the perks is %50 off admission and skate rental. From what I've seen on their club website, only girls are in the club. All girls is pretty nice, but I'd feel awkward without ever having any guys around. Has anyone been in a club like this?

when I was a kid I spent my winters either building snow forts or skating.

Having grown up in Minnesota, I tend to view skating in the same vein as running for your life. It's something you just do but rarely practice.

your nearest rink is a little high but not by much. the $3 skate rental is pretty much universal.

if you are just learning how to skate with the aspiration to play hockey later on i would buy some used skates. do not buy new gear as it is f'n expensive. i paid about $350 for just my skates. granted i won't every buy another pair again and just switch out blades once they get ground down too much.

i have never belonged to a club like that but get a buddy interested too and then go for it. well, as long as it isn't figure skating. there are hockey clubs out there that usually accept all skill levels. you might look into those too.

yeah it might be kind of weird skating with a bunch of chicks.

$7 for public skating? that's steep. my wife started playing hockey this year so I went skating with her a few times. it was only a couple bucks. hmm. lots of kids out there though, I had to be careful not to bowl any over. even skating gingerly, some of these cute little guys cut out in front of you pretty fast! :)

hmm... move to Canada? You can play pickup with us on Tuesday nights :p

That's the only thing I hate about Texas. Hockey isn't played that much. I've looked into the hockey league through the rink, but it's pretty expensive (for me) and I'd need to buy pads, helmet, etc.

I grew up on the ice. I was a recreational (sometimes competitive) figure skater for 16 years. In my opinion a figure skating club is the best place to learn to skate. They should have an adult "learn to skate" program and then if you really like it you can buy your own skates eventually.

Anyway $7 is a lot for public skating, usually I pay $3.00 or do an outdoor rink.

I payed about $600 for my skates. ;) One90's are damn nice skates. Granted, I play hockey and skate 6 times a week in season.

OP, I would recommend taking a "learn to figure skate" class, even if you want to play hockey. You'll learn a lot more about skating and edge control than other classes, and hockey will be much more enjoyable if you're a good skater :)

It's funny that you mention that. When I was younger, one summer my power skating instructor was a figure skater :)

Some of the best skaters I ever played hockey with were former figure skaters. Mind you none of them were quite as good as me :p. While $7 may strike us from Canada as steep I am sure that upkeep costs in Texas on an ice rink are intensely high. I would suggest buying used skates also, although I have no idea what they go for down there.

Bauer Vapor 9s - the model from a couple years ago - can probably be found for under $100 US. Pretty good skate, perfect for someone starting out.

I taught a couple of power skating courses. I loved working with the hockey kids. Its good to get them skating hard without the stick.
