Anyone into Drum & Bugle Corps?

Those guys are amazing, watched the Madison Scouts, Dubuque Colts, Concord Blue Devils, Phantom Regiment

all were amazing

anyone tour with a drum corp as a youth?

in junior high, i performed with a local community marching band from pasadena, ca (9-10 years ago). we were terrible, but we toured throughout the pacific coast / midwest region that year, and saw many of the drum corps you mentioned. i remember the first time i saw the blue devils...just wow...best brass section in the country.

were you able to see the cavaliers? cavaliers won the drum corp championship in 2000,2001, 2002 i believe.

fyi: the PBS network usually broadcasts the dci finals at the end of sumer (this year will be in denver).

Did it as a kid. Lotta of long bus rides and sweating on football fields. Stopped cause family moved.
Also lost interest as more and more "gimmicks" were introduced. If you could not carry it on the field, it shouldn't be allowed in a performance.

Music was pretty good, though. Chick Corea's stuff was very big in Drum Corps for awhile.

Drum Corps International linkage.

lucky man...I had tickets to the finals 2 years ago, but problems came up with my family so my g/f (at the time) and I couldn't go...really regret that one. I think I've had friends in 3 of the 4 groups you listed, hehe. I don't know what other areas are, but metro detroit and the surrounding areas have a pretty big marching band scene (all of michigan, really, since places like Jennison aren't from around here, but used to place 2nd in the state).

I miss marching...I wish I had the time to do it at UM.

i was a member of a Drum Corps back in the late 80s, and went on the 'Tour' but it wasn't in the US. i was also selected to be one of the member of our national drum corps that went to visit the European Championship World Tour in 1989, in the tournaments such as Hamar Windmusle Festival (Hamar, Norway), Goteborg Music Festival (Goteborg, Sweden), and World Music Contest (Kerkrade, Netherland).

those are great times.

does anybody know when it will be shown this year? i plan to tape it but i couldn't seem to find the information anywhere.

i work with a ton of people who are Phantom Regiment alumni...
Phantom Regiment is from here, and practice here - my company is one of their big sponsors, so they played a show in our parking lot a few weeks ago 🙂

watching those kids drum puts the movie Drumline to shame

nope, i played clarinet so a woodwind doenst exactly fit in a DBC. Every July at Mile High they have a DCI called Drums along the Rockies. We have gone many times and its a blast.

tis awesome.........
I toured briefly with a small corp out of Oklahoma one summer in college. I cant remember the name 😱
We had alot of fun that summer (read: sex, drugs, and endless practice)😀

But yeah the blue devils, cadets of bergen county, etc ruled

Burlington Teen Tour Band...

With them, I performed in Baltimore for the 4th of July, Rosebowl, Orangebowl, The bowl in Hawaii that I can't remember (Hulabowl? Alohabowl?) Canadian Chamionships at the Calgary Stampede...

The lucky buggers got to be the only band present at the D-Day celebrations in France...

I play snare obviously, and I have always aspired to join DCI, the cavaliers in particular. however, because of my lack of practicing, I feel that dream will never be accomplished, so ill have to live with our crappy HS marching back i guess. But watch the world championships in august, you will be amazed the stuff these guys can do, and the Cavies theme this year is 007 and the show is awesome. They are on PBS sometime in august, watch and be amazed, even if you dont like marching band

As a former band geek, one of my aspirations in High School was to join a Drum/Bugle Corp. My first exposure to it was just before my freshman year (1989) when I saw Santa Clara's(?) performance of Phantom of the Opera. It blew me away I was instantly hooked on almost all things DCI for the next four years.

Alas, due to a bunch of bad excuses, I never joined a Corp, but I still had fun with my High School Marching Band when it was started up again - after a 10-year hiatus - my Junior year. We were pretty darn good considering our size and lack of experience and won all of the major state tournaments for our class. Our band instructor was about as good as a band instructor could get.

Anyway, I hope I'll be able to see another show as it passes through the area. I've always been impressed with the Cavaliers and Madison Scouts, in particular. These groups put on a show as exciting as anything I've ever been to.

Yep. Racist bastards. I'm a saxophone/flute player, too :| I never had any desire to play brass or percussion, and by the time I got into spinning, it was gonna be very hard to build up the chops to spin against people who have been doing it for years and years.

Then again, as my tendrils in that scene extend and I get to know more and more "hardcore" marching band/drum corps types, I don't think I would fit in well with that class of people....I'm probably better off where I am 😉

BLUE DEVILS, BABY!

hell yeah!!!

also, if you're in Cali, check out the tour of champions, that should be amazing.

marched quints in HS, i was going to march for the Velvet Knights in Anaheim, but they became defunct before i got a chance... oh well...

in any case, i think i'll be a showdown between the Devs and the Cavies this year. saw the Devils live, their show is awesome, and i've heard the Cavies show, but i have yet to see it. their scores says that the Cavies rock this year.

i played baritone in HS marching band.
i loved marching band, it was hard work, but i had alot of fun doing it.
i try to catch the DCI championships they play every year on PBS.

I keep hearing ads on NPR about some corps(12 or so, havent mentioned any names) that are going to be in Garden City KS tomorrow night. its tempting to head up there and check that out.

one of the best things is touring the parking lots and watching everyone warm up, especially the drumlines... they draw almost as big of a crowd as the actual shows themselves

I really love the warmups too, the drumlines are absolutely amazing, i would love to be able to play like that, it is always good to show people, cause most people have never seen anything like it before
