I'm only 23 and have back pain. It isn't super severe, but enough to make me squirm if I sit in a chair for 15 minutes or so.

I am in fairly decent shape, I get enough rest, and I have a memory foam bed.

Is it normal to get back pain at this young of an age? And if not, any suggestions on what to do (besides seeing a doctor, I already made an appt for June 5th, the earliest he can get me in).

Edit: I had a four wheeler accident a few years ago that bruised up my back pretty well, but they did x rays and said they saw no problems.

yeah, PMS can be a bitch

seriously though, it could be a pinched nerve, RA, anything.
Try some of those heat strips/pads by thermacare... that or take a very hot bath with a full scoop of bath salts with mint or something else with "effervesence" trust me, you are not feminine if you do that, and it will work, if only temporarily

Yep, since I was 16. I just finished a 6 month set of physical therapy a couple months ago. I'm in very good shape and very athletic. For me the key for help is stretching. Now I do a good amount of stretching every day and I feel a ton better. For whatever reason I just have incredibly tense muscles that need much more stretching than normal.

Generally, I'd say that's not normal. I did injure my back at the age of 19 though. I landed straight legged when I came down fro ma layup during basketball. The chiropractor said I put "my back out of alignment". I think I tiwsted a vertebre or something.

Now to describe the pain. I had to wait 2 days to see the doc. I probably slept 15-30 minutes total teh first night.

Is that the kind of pain?

At age 26, I first noticed my knees starting to ache. At 31, I kinda don't like stair cases anymore. nto that it hurts, but my body isn't like it used to be.

Yoga works

yogabasics.com has some pictures of yoga poses. Just do a lot of stretches every day and it will help. Seated stretches where you lean forward are easy to do and can go a long way to easing back pain. Do abdominal exercises and watch your posture as well. Always lift with your legs, not your back.

There is one back exercise you can do to strengthen your back. Lie down face down, arms at your side, then lift your chest off the ground without pushing with your arms. Just do it a few times per day and it should help reduce the chance of injury in the future. Don't do it if it hurts a lot, and don't do it so much that it hurts a lot.

Here are a few things outside the scope of your back injury.
  • As bctbct mentioned, wear good shoes and pull your ankles up. Do not allow your ankles to fall inward. Also, point your toes forward when you stand and walk. Allowing your toes to point outward at an angle allows your ankles to fall inward, which in turn misaligns your leg bones, up through your hips, thus misaligning your spine and posture.
  • As lozina mentioned, strengthen your stomach muscles since they work together with your back muscles in supporting your upper body.
  • Straighten your back when you stand and sit. Support your upper body with the muscles in your stomach and back rather than supporting your upper body with the bones in your spine. This will further allow you to breathe deeper, which will provide more oxygen and energy for your body.

it isn't that bad, just enough to be really annoying...like going up stairs hurts, getting out of a car takes me longer than before, sitting in a chair for an extended period, or the worst: sitting in the church pew on Sunday hurts horribly - i squirm like a little kid.

Once in a while, maybe once every other month, I wake up with terrible back pain. I can barely move. I mean severe. It usually hurts for 24 hours after that and then goes away for a while.

I've had back pain for a LONG time. I've tried everything, only thing I have ever found to help my back was yoga. try it.

I don't have ongoing pain, but I've always had back spasms since around the 7th grade. When they come on, I'm pretty much fubared for about 5-10 minutes then they fade away and return a few weeks later.

I had three bulging disks in my lower back when I was 25.

I tried my MD for months and he was.... well useless except for getting tons of drugs.

I tried physical therapy... it helped a bit, but not much.

I finally gave in and tried a chiropractor. Wish I had done it sooner. I'm 27 now and my back is strong and healthy.

I've suffered through back pain most of my life.

Started deteriorating in high school- pain shooting down the leg which indicates a sciatic nerve injury.
Couldn't sit thru graduation without killer pain.
Three ruptured lower disks (sports related) and mild scoliosis.
Back spasms, pain while sneezing or bearing down on the can (ugh!).

Whatever you do, you have to work through the pain. Be mentally tough yet listen to your body. Set you own pace throughout the day and give your body a rest at night.

Back pain can be incredibly debilitating, but never give up.
