Anyone in the Raleigh area wanna let me practice driving a stick?

I've driven one a couple times and know the basics, but need some practice. I might be getting a new car soon and whatever I get will be a 5-speed. Wish I knew someone with a 5-speed beater, LOL

I want to learn it as well. How did you guys start learning stick?

Bought one and taught myself. And to fbrdphreak, your only chance of getting someone to let you learn to drive a manual in their car is if someone you turn into a hot chick.

I would just buy it and learn, but I want to test drive the car as I don't know if its what I want. And I want to test drive the manual! 😛

My gf is hot, I'll ask her if she knows any guys who drive a stick. 😀

My ex had a 1979 datsun 280ZX that I wanted custody of when we split. He said no, that I did not know how to drive a stick. Knowing that my owning this beauty was totally dependent on my making it look like I could drive a stick, I got in it, started it up and drove around the block.

I had that car for about 4 years, until some dickhead in a van ran a light, accordianed the front of my car and drove off. I only had limited liability on it so was not covered. I did not have money to fix it, so gave it to a friend of mine who could afford it.

Man, I miss that car.

🙁 🙁 🙁

I've heard this term a lot from Americans - "stick shift"... and i'm interested, what do you change gear with if not a stick? Do American cars have pedals to change gear or something? Or are they all autos?

Stick Shift vs. Automatic. In an automatic, the car changes gears. There's often a stick with automatics, but that just puts it into drive.

Oh, LOL. I thought there was some other method I was not aware of 🙂

So how come many Americans can only drive autos? When I got my licence I had to take the test in a 5-speed manual (stick shift) by law.

Are there actually manual cars for rent? I thought must rentals were automatic since most people drive automatic

Actually, there are some old cars that have push-button shifting. I forget what it is, but a friend's dad from my high school days had one in his garage and we had a debate on how stupid it was to reach up and push a button instead of just moving a stick.

Also, various types of race cars have paddles behind the steering wheel that shift gears.

The Enzo has paddle shifters. Not that this little distinction matters to anyone driving cars in AT

I hate paddle shift. It's not tactile enough, there's a delay between pushing the paddle and shifting, and what's wrong with the purely mechanical system anyway? Bah.

So why are American cars all automatic? I wonder if it's because there is so many straight roads with nothing on them, so you don't need to work the gears so much to go faster... Or maybe it's the performance car scene... Europeans and Japs tend to mod the transmittion, suspension, etc, as well as the engine, whereas the Americans just drop in a massive V8 🙂

Because they're retards. 90% of American cars are auto; it's sinful.

My friend in HK has a GTi with DSG paddle shifter....the shifting was not delayed at all. And is much smoother than automatic.

He hasn't moved back here yet, I believe the house is still being built. Doubt he'd remember me anyway, LOL 😉
