I am a 4th year Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences major, but i find myself more interested in the financial industry, especially investment banking, can anyone tell me what it is like to be in that industry, and how can you get there (besides school, any training?? NYC for training to be a broker?? )

Investment bankers pay their dues early, working weekends with no life.

Money is good though.

Aren't "brokers" basically gophers, and "traders" the ones that are actually respected?

Happykitten - No.

ElectricEyes - When I was in college I seriously thought that a career as a stockbroker was for me. Unfortunately, the essence of selling was cold calling like a beotch. I got a foot in the door in collge as a cold caller for a stock broker and I honestly couldn't hang doing endless dialing.

Anyhow Axelfox is right, you start off your career building a client base who u milk for the rest of your life. If you want to get in the industry, I'd recommend getting a job at a local Smith Barney, Dean Witter, wherever. If you find you like it, those places will generally pay for your schooling to get a license. Anyhow, FYI, you don't need a college degree to be a stock broker (as I know two who are making serious cash without one).

You need a series 7 to become a broker. Usually a big corporate firm will take you through the process if you get in early enough.
