Anyone in college here?

From the looks of many of the posts around here I would saya good percentage of you are college students. What's it like on your campus being a computer freak (or nerd)? Are there 'support groups' to help you out with your addiction? What about LAN gaming? Is it big? When I lived in the dorms here at UC Berkeley (2 years ago), Starcraft LAN gaming was HUGE! I remember wasting so much time playing that game all night against my hallmates. Anyone else have college gaming 'experiences' like me?

Last year StarCraft was huge here. I didn't get into it much because it's not my sort of game. This year I haven't heard about that game at all, Unreal took the title.

Yeah, Q3 and RA has been pretty big here lately, but some people (like me) aren't that big into the FPS stuff. Personally, I like Unreal better cuz I don't get as naseuous playing it. Some of my friends are trying to start a gamers club here on campus. Anyone have something like that on their campus? If so, let me know how it works so I can take notes.

-Mday I can't really tell if you are joking or not. Don't hang out much in OT. Please explain.

Yeah, I'm a college student. Computer freak? I think I look pretty normal :). LAN gaming? NOPE. No college experiences, people I've known were not as freaky as me about PCs. The only person that supports my habit is my partner who is the person that got me involved.

Yep, LAN gaming is big here on the 10mbps connection, now upgraded to 100mbps.
Last year Delta Force, and the year before that was Starcraft. This year Diablo II and i've heard some Counter Strike.
The whole hall was playing it.
I know I'm gonna miss the network when i graduate next semester. :(

Thanks Prodigy...

Where do you go to school, starlitt? This may haev something to do with the fact that there are few computer freaks out there. The EECS department here kinda breeds them you know. Heck, we even have a Linux Users group here. (No BSD group tho, suprisingly!) If you want to find out some info about our gaming club here at Berkeley, go to www.collegegaming.org and check it out. The site and club are just starting, so bear with us. Oh, yeah we know it looks like crap in Netscape! I'm wokring on that right now!

I am attending Community College here in Nevada, I just moved here from Sunny California and I cannot afford out of state tution at UNLV. I don't know if the Community College or UNLV breeds CompGeeks, I haven't spoken to anyone ;). My PSY 101 teacher is pretty freaky about Computers though, thats a first. The webpage looks pretty cool, I wish we had something like that at the college. So can I join even though I don't attend your college?

<< Anyone in college here? >>

That's like walking in to a tavern and asking if anyone is drinking a beer. Duh. This place is infested with college students. It's like a plague of locusts.

Of course you can join! Part of the goal of the club is to spread the word about gaming on college campuses and get other schools and places involved. There can even be competitions between schools for prizes and such. Probably about one quarter of the people on the BBS @ www.collegegaming.org aren't from Berkeley, but are looking for a place to game.

Russ- Nice thread going about the election... You guys are hilarious!

I've had fun playing Q1, Q2, Q3, UT, and most recently, Counter-strike in the dorms. Nothing like running down the hallway of your dorm annoucing you were the guy who led the last round of Counter-strike in frags, lol.

Playing Rainbow 6, UT, Counter-Strike, and Diablo 2 on a 100 Mbit LAN is awesome....especially when it's all people that are on the same hall as you.

R6 and Rogue Spear were great too. Nothing like "accidently" shooting your friend and hearing him yell at you from down the hall, lol.

Architecture major here at Carnegie Mellon University... big big CS school. I'm not into gaming all that much, but I know a lot of people who are. My suitemates started the OGS (Online Gaming Society) here, and I think in one year, they shot up to second place in the Quake Tournament at HEAT.net? I'm not sure, just hear them talking about it a lot. If you want to get in the know, I can hook you up with his email, I'm sure he'd like to help. He has put together a couple of on campus game tournaments, managed to get some sponsorship from companies. Think Logitech was one... forgot the others. On by the way, for placing in the Heat.net tournament, they also got some money, so he put together a Quake server in his room. They also get funding from the school, like all the other clubs. PM me if you want his email.

-Wild, I've done that a few times myself... Quite fun I must say. Part of the fun in the dorms is the speed of the connection which is a huge change for most people who have only used 56K at home.

-dcdomain, that type of club is exactly what we are starting. I would really like more info on the subject. Are you psrt of the club? Do they have a web site? If you could give me his info, that would be fantastic... either that or direct him to www.collegegaming.org so he can check it out for himself.
