been dating almost a year and a half, and I go to school 5 hours (350 miles) away. I go home once or twice a month. It's hard sometimes, but def. do-able.

been there. done that. I was 10 hours away... at least 600 miles. We were going out for several years before that at school together... long distance killed it in less than 9 months. (it was pretty much cooked by 7 months) I visited on average at least twice a month.

i was in one in college from a semester. it was rough. in the end, long distance relationships don't work. there hasn't to be a physical component.

my vacation to ireland overlapped a few days w/ my g/f's vacation to italy. it'll be 3 weeks before it's said and done. i don't think i would be able to stand it much longer. as it is, i'm trying to fight back the urge to buy a ticket to go to italy to see her.

My friend is in NJ and his fiance is in Korea.

They're doing fine and it helps that they're both very busy.

I'm 26. My GF is 36. I live in ATL. She lives in Salt Lake City, UT. (She's not a Mormon.) We've been dating for just over a year. Yes, it can be difficult at times, but we talk daily on the phone, sometime also on Yahoo IM, and we fly to see each other at least once a month.

We were 100kms (1 hour) apart for about a year (the first year of our relationship).

Not sure if that counts but we are still together and very happy (now he lives 32kms away! haha!)

i have been, 6 hours apart.

let's just say that was the downfall of our relationship and i have been apart from here for over 3 years now. we had been dating for about 4-5 years when this happened. i would see her like once every 3 weeks for a weekend.

I was in a long distance relationship until I married her ;)

She lived in Canberra, Australia and I live in Portland, Oregon.

Dating someone now who is 1-1.5 hours away. That is about all I can handle. It's been a while since I have had to plan around the weekends like this.

I think it can work if you're older, not so much though if you're young.

I was dating a girl for 2 1/2 years, things couldn't have been better, we got separated by an hour or so, saw each other once every two to three weeks, fell apart in about four months.

Oddly enough, though, we're still just as close.

Aww all these success stories are great!
Makes me feel like my relationship can work.
Yay!
But he is only 1 hour and 20 minutes away.

2 1/2 hours away - actually, I've graduated, and she has ~1 year to go; I try to visit as often as I can.

Oh, we've been dating for ~8 months, and I moved out 3 mos. into the relationsship. :)

Most are doomed to fail because of proximity, one of the three key factors in attraction, and the one that wields the most power early in the relationship. I conducted a study that began Jan 2005 and ended this past January on long distance relationships. 65% of the relationships were broken off within 3 months and 90% by the end of the study.

Hmm... just a comment:

I have a few gay friends that tried to work out long distance relationships with their SO's. They were all committed at first, etc, but I think the distinctive deficiency in the physical portion of having a relationship pretty much killed every one of them. The only one that sort of "works" is a pair I was friends with in college, that mutually agreed to see other people recreationally?, while maintaining their SO status with one another. Dunno, but whatever.

I don't know how to put this without sounding like a bigot, but at least from what I have seen of my gay friends, they are much more "out there?", and thus more susceptible to failure in a long-distance relationship.

Flame if you like, but at least get the point.

married for almost 2 years. We've been living 2000 miles apart since then. (long story, maybe I'll post about it sometime). I have the opportunity to move back and keep my present job; now she's not so sure she wants me back.

I think this will end badly within the next 6 months.
