working retail sucks, i just finished working my summer job as a cashier at Wal-Fart and learned these things

- customers are alaways trying to get things for cheaper then there real price
- although everyone uses a credit card only 50 percent of hte people can actually use the credit card machine properly in the store
- "if there is no price does that mean its free" thats gets old very quick
- you dont get a discount if you had to wait in line a long time
- people that call you by the name on your "name badge" acting/pretending to be your friend are very annoying

As a consumer, it's just our inspiration to you that you do NOT want to be working retail all your life. :D

EDIT: I worked at Best Buy LAST summer for 3 months- it was ok, but I'll never go back. The discounts made it worth it though! :Q

I work in a hardware store- I get all the crap you've mentioned above plus a whole lot more. People assume that because I work there I can answer every question they might have without even having to think about it.

Tell me about it. Since there are often very small sales in hardware stores (ie 2 bolts that cost 5 cents a piece) I always get the "Biggest sale of the day huh?" thing. People just think they're hilarious.

also customers seem to argue prices becasue most of them CANT read.
it usally goes like this

customer: there is a price over there that says this lotion is $2.50

me: no, its not, its ringing up for $2.97

customer: the price is over there $2.50

if u bothered to READ, then u would know that its a different item.

also if u realize u dont want something when your waitng in line dont just throw it somewere, or leave it hanging around by the register, its so ignorant
just give what u dont want to the cashier, they will take it gladly.

i worked as a cashier at meijer a couple years back. people in general are stupid, especially ones that came through my lane. the ones i hated the most were the ones that acted as if I were personally ripping them off if something was mispriced. aaaargh i wanna punch something now

Here's something I learned from having to shop at a kmart for four years:

- The store is always trying to charge you more than what it says on the shelf, or worse, double charge you.
- the credit card machines only work half the time, and they dont save any time anyways
- the best way to get someone to get off their ass and price label something is to complain that there was no price
- even though they promise to open a new register if three people are in line they never do, so lines are always long.
- cashiers that say "thank you Mr. XXXXXX" and try to be personal get annoying fast.

Edit: In my experience, about half the time I have a dispute about an item's price its my fault, and the other half of the time its either because the price in the system in wrong or some lazy-ass employee forgot to either take the sale sign down.

I have worked retail my entire life. Just got fired from Home Depot about a month ago too :)

I had a customer ask me what a shovel was. We made fun of that guy forever ( and still do, 2 years after it happened :) )

My retail rules:

#1 The customer is always right.
#2 They must be punnished for their arrogance.

i have so much built up anger towards these customers !
another note

When you are paying for something dont crumple up the money and give it to me, or dont just throw it on the counter, its very annoying when u have to uncrumple bills before u count them, and have to throw lots of change on a counter, is it htat hard to give the money in the cashier's hand?

when hte cashier gives u change does he or she throw it on the counter adn expect you to pick it up?, do tehy crumple the bills before they give them to you? do they throw your 79 cents on the counter and make u pick up youc change off the counter?

I worked at CompUSA last year for a few months, and it was complete hell. The funny thing is, the customers were not the problem - most of them were very very nice. It was the managers that would piss me off. One time the manager started cursing at me in front of customers for completly no reason. I swear I will never EVER work retail again.

Also NEVER ask "can u cehck if you have taht in the back?"

the associate might say no right there, or PRETEND there checking take a 5 minute walk, not really look and say "Nope just checked we dont have it "

this will save lots of time and false hope

As for the pricing issue:

Customers are lying theaving bastards. We had customers remove tags ( the UPC stickers ) from cheap stuff and put it on expensive stuff. For instance, primed moulding vers oak moulding. The primed stuff was 39 cents a foot, the oak was 79. They would take 100's of stickers off and switch them with the oak ones. The cashiers didn't notice. Durring inventory, we would show negitive 10,000 feet of primed, and be short 10,000 feet of oak.

If you ever shopped at home depot, you will notice that our labels look like they are hand written, but are machine printed. The labels almost had "layers" and you can peal off parts if you are really bored. We used to have customers change the price on the shelf my making that $8 item into a $3 item. Bunch of theves.

Hell, right after I left, we had a 2+ customer theft team come in. They took a bunch of big ticket stuff to the back of the store and cut a hole in the lumber doors and toss a bunch of stuff outside to a waiting truck, then jumped though themselves. Jeez.
