how'd you get the job?

I wanna be a bartender or server this summer and then into next year, so I'm kinda curious how it all works

I worked at a movie theater for 3 years, domino's for a few months, and at an architecture firm for almost a year (internship kind of), but never at a restaurant/bar

do you have to be like a busboy/dishwasher/whatever before being a server?

do you have to be a server before being a bartender?

best place to get a job as a server (male)? a chain place like ruby tuesday's or a local place? or do you have to start at an even smaller place (like a local diner)?

thanks for any help

from what i remember, at some places, yes. you have to work your way up, at others they'll let you start as a server. a friend of mine wanted to be a bartender part time, and they told him they only wanted full time, dedicate your early years type of people.

the more lucrative, popular, hip/trendy places ask more of you than like say, denny's.

Usually bartenders have to take a long ass course. Something like 40 hours. But god damn they get a shit ton of tips. I just think about how much I tip the bartender then multiply that by 500.

I work at a restaurant part time. I started hosting/bussing tables and then worked into serving. They usually move people up in house that way you can be cross trained in a few different jobs. I have no desire to bartend, but like the above poster said they make really good money. On slow nights where I'm lucky to take home $40 in tips its not uncommon for my bartender friends to take home $100+.

I'm going to go around to some different restaurants tomorrow and ask if they are hiring

wearing khaki pants, brown sperry's (boat shoes), and a off-red polo
that's all I brought home from college by accident, but I could go buy different clothes if necessary?

any tips?

that should work just fine. are you a hot female? That's been the hiring theme for bartenders since the early 2000s.

but walk in, possibly before they open, and talk to the mgr. you don't need any kind of class or education. if you've never been a bartender I doubt they'd put you in that job right away since it does take a lot of knowledge of different drinks. A lot of places will have a bar back on high volume nights which is a good entry level for learning how to tend bar. It usually doesn't pay well since you're only getting minimum wage + ~10% of what the bartender pulls in tips.

The bartender makes what they earn in tips + a ~10% tipout from all of the servers.

For a server, you don't need any experience and could probably start bar tending by mid summer if you get a few nights of practice.

its good money for college age summer job. much easier to find seasonal work like this in a resort location.

You're not going to get hired straight to bartender without experience. You'll be a waiter or a bar back.

Could try getting a parttime bartender job at a 'cheap' restaurant chain since those usually have lower requirements. I was parttime bartender a while when in highschool. Little customer interaction due to the way the restaurant was set up, but you get a lot of experience. At one point due to 2 calling in sick at the last moment and one not showing up I ended up doing all 4 bars in the restaurant solo until the owner noticed and joined in running those bars. Got some nice tips that day (and had steak for lunch).
