I was curious to see if any paralegals (or lawyers who know about paralegals) posted on here, because I'm thinking about getting my paralegal certificate. If there are, I have a few questions:

What exactly are your duties? Does a paralegal do mostly legal research? Do you like your job?

I'm excited, because I think I found something that I might like to do. I don't really want to go to law school for three years, and getting a certificate only takes a year or so.

Thanks!

I work in a law firm and I can tell you we have about 10 paralegals and they all do something different every day.

Real estate paralegals run titles and set up closings all day

Bankruptcy paralegals get all forms and stuff filled out for bankruptcies and also electronically file them

Collections paralegals enter new claims and work with CBRs

Insurance paralegals mostly enter and go through data and evidence and type up letters

 All paperwork and research. Not fun stuff.

That sounds interesting...I get bored doing the same thing every day.

Umm...did I mention that I have a history degree and am working at Walmart right now? This isn't exactly much fun either. :p

In other words, the paralegals do all the footwork, and the lawyer gets all the recognition. I tried that in college, and dropped it after a semester. If that works for you, go for it.

hah, i meant each paralegal does something different than the other, but each paralegal does pretty much the same thing that particular paralegal did yesterday
