I just bought a 7900GTX that is waiting to be shipped. Then the horror.....I have been reading various problems with the factory overclocked cards as well as some non-overclocked cards. The main problem is artifacting. I tried doing a search here and couldn't find anyone with a 7900GTX with problems. I am keeping my fingers crossed that I will not have any issues. Anyone in here with or without issues?

The Bottom Line

There are some ?bad? 7900 video cards out there right now if you are going to shop for the overclocked variety. Again, it seems to me BFGTech is catching less flack than EVGA and XFX, but that is not a scientific observation. Keep in mind that BFGTech does not overclock their cards as high as EVGA or XFX. If I were buying an overclocked 7900 card right now, I would be leaning towards BFGTech or EVGA simply because they have a much better reputation when it comes to warranty, support, and service.

If you have a card to RMA, return it to the card builder, not the retailer. Given the awareness level of this problem at this time I would suggest that you have a much better chance of getting a solid 7900 directly from the card builder.

Lastly, I would not let this scare me away from buying an overclocked GeForce 7900 series video card as all the players are very aware something is going on with the cards and trying their best to make sure the problem is solved. Then again, there does seem to be certain level of risk with buying an overclocked card so a non-overclocked 7900 from a reputable builder might be a smart option. Just remember that when you are buying a video card that you are paying for service, support, and warranty as well as the hardware.

That article is primarily referring to 7900GT cards that are factory overclocked, and not 7900GTXs.

...I had two eVGA 7900GTX EGS cards, and both of them were fine.

My XFX 7900GTX (non-overclocked) has been fine so far, managed to get one pretty early on, so it's been in use for a while.

I've been heavily benchmarking my Gigabyte 7900GTX since I got it yesterday and so far it's been working extremely well.

I recommend you stick to manufacturers that manufacturer tier 1 motherboards like Asus or Gigagbyte as you should get better quality from them.

I know a friend that is on the 3rd 7900GT because the past 2 started having problems after several days of owning me.
For myself, I am on my 2nd one because my last one only worked fine for 2 days.

i got two bad EVGA 7900gtx egs last week RMAs are being cross shipped, great customer service from EVGA BTW.. mine have the artifacts, colored dots, and screen flickering requiring a reboot upon exiting most games, hoping i can get lucky enough to get 2 good cards.

How's the noise level BFG? I know we have to wait for the benches :p

It's extremely quiet, even under load.

What's more, the temperatures are simply amazing. It's about 5C cooler than my 7800GT (the 7900GTX idles at only 41C!) and under load it's about 10-15C cooler.

In terms of thermal characteristics and lack of noise this thing is simply amazing. The cooler is simply stunning.

Yup, as per usual they are coming. They should be up in the next day or so. ;)

It's roughly 50% faster than my old 7800GT and it allows me to run 8xS in quite a lot of games, even at 1920x1440. And when you combine super-sample transparency AA in Direct3D games with 8xS the image quality is simply out of this world.

Vampire Bloodlines is actually fast enough for me to run 16xAA with super-sample transparency AA and it's like watching a pre-rendered CGI movie. There's not a single pixel out of place as far as the eye can see.

Did someone say 44db? Hellll no. I made my rig as quiet as possible (scythe ninja with an 800rpm fan, only low rpm'ing 120mm's in case [and a 140mm on a zalman fanmate]), there is but the waft of airflow, and at no point can I hear the GTX. I can put my ear as close to it as I like (bearing in mind it's in the motherboard) and cannot hear the difference if I jab a finger in it to stop the fan.

Mine idles at 37 - 38. It really is a very well designed cooler, as the fan just never starts running fast. I could imagine it being 40+db when at full rpm, but unless your case temp is over 40 degrees C or something, I really can't see the card ever getting that hot that the fan will go that high.

Basically, with the 7900gtx, if you have anything else in your case, you won't hear the 7900 (IMHO of course :) )

7900GTX here...big time problem. Stock speeds as per nVidia spec (manufacturer of *my* card omitted intentionally, at least until I complete the troubleshooting/RMA process...) Artifacts from very first boot - never even got a chance to try a game.

My 7900GTX arrived. Runs 5c cooler than my 7800GT with Accelero X1. Stock cooler as quiet as the X1 and runs cooler so no need to buy another cooler. Played BF2 at 1280 with everything MAXED and ran 3dMark05. No problems yet. I'm going to load FEAR and run COD2 demo. I'm kinda afraid to run 3dMark06.

So, you decided to stick with nVIDIA? Good choice.

Try these drivers. They are based on the official 84.21's and if the IQ isn't some of the best you've ever seen, I'll happily eat my hat (just trying to figure out how I managed to miss this set when they fist came out). I've had the official 84.21's on previously, and while good, were nowhere near this good.

There are always a few bad apples. What company?

I haven't yet completed the troubleshooting process with them, and I'd like to finish it before allowing my experience to reflect on their company. Feel free to make your own deductions, but so far the support has been more than adequate, and I don't think (based on other's postings) that getting this thing RMA'd is going to be a problem....maybe I'll drag my feet a bit though, it hopes of a new PCB revision...

keldog7, i had the same problem here. my 7900gtx started artifacting a day after i purchased it. it was artifacting even on a cold boot, during POST, so i figured it's not an overheating issue.
i fixed the problem. it was the PSU. i had an old TT 400W, bought an enermax 620W (http://www.enermax.com/english/product_Display1.asp?PrID=5), artifacting is gone, system is rock solid.
thanks

XFX 7900GTX Xtreme 690/1850, had bad artifacting in BF2 after hours of play, but increasing case air flow made it disappear completely, so it was a heat issue for me initially. Good thing for Double Life-time warranty. :)

Well, I'm glad it worked for you...didn't work for me though. I don't think temps are the problem either - this thing can't get past the LOGIN screen! If it can overheat with virtually no video load, and in under 60 seconds, there's something wrong with the card, AFAIK.
