Do you have a separate cheap and disposable cell phone just for traveling?

I don't want to take my iPhone 4 with me and I'm looking for a cheap quad band phone for like $50. In case it gets stolen, I don't really care.

Your chances of it being stolen outside the country isnt much different from it being stolen in country. But on the flip side, do you really want to pay the out of country prices? Just grab a cheapie pre paid

Depends on where I would travel.

If traveling to the USA, I would feel reasonably safe since it's not that much more dangerous than Sweden, at least not in the tourist-friendly areas. In Europe, I would of course feel 100% safe bringing an expensive phone.

However the frequency band situation is something I would look into. You don't want to be stuck with just 2G if you're staying for a long time.

Yep. I travel to Belarus yearly and spend 3 months there. I use an old prepaid phone. It serves the job very well, since it has a sim card.

There are a lot of them on ebay. Yes, I actually think this is a good idea.. and make sure you get one which lasts for at least 2 days.

That's the plan. Use a cheap phone that is quad band (worldwide compatibility) and buy a local prepaid sim card in that country for pennies on the dollar.

OP, when I was in Asia, I took my old Motolora V220 with a removable sim card. The local shop took it out and replaced it with a local sim card. It worked like a charm.

I bough prepaid cards for about $5/each and it did last for a week or two, not bad at all.

Just take whatever phone you currently have unless you are travelling to the third world (or Milan). Make sure to confirm with your phone company about roaming and international charges though.

You have never seen how much they charge for overseas roaming charges have you?

I've got a quadband phone that I bought when I was in Hong Kong. I just swap out sim cards. Only problem is that doing so in the US is not so common. I was able to get on T-Mobile's pay as you go plan that did allow me to just get a sim card for the plan as opposed to having to buy a new phone.

Lulz, on a side point I have to laugh at yet another silly perception of the world Americans have: "Everywhere outside of the USA is a dark and scary place!"

Just get a local sim, put it in your iphone and BOOM! If you are smart enough to purchase travel insurance your iPhone will be covered if lost or stolen.

I get my cheap GSM phone overseas, because stupid ATT locks even their prepaid phone.
