What was the final file size? 10bit? 264 or 265? FLAC? (though I think GiTS:SAC only ever had AAC or DTS, no FLAC source)
Average of ~1.6GB an episode, dual TrueHD tracks, 10-bit, 264.
265 would give better quality / lower file size, but decided that it was a little too cutting edge for a novice like myself.

Having 4x X5675s at my disposal definitely helped! (and kept the apartment warm :p )

Dont worry, it takes forever to encode unless you have GTX 960 or better GPU or a Skylake intel CPU as nothing else has hardware encoders for 265 yet.

264 is still most the most common you will find, though I expect this to shift more in the next 18 months.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but don't some hardware 265 encoders take shortcuts / compromise Q for speed? In that sense, I prefer software-based encoders.

Its not that they take shortcuts or compromises, they are just built for very specific encoding tasks, software encoders allow you to change any number of aspects of the encode process. However hardware encoders don't have this luxury.

What they lack in customizability though, they make up for in performance.

If you have a VAST abundance of spare CPU time, software may be your preference. But with UHD content, MOST people just dont have the CPU time available for a software encode as it would take several days for a single movie.

One Punch man. Watched the 13 episodes and then read the manga. Loved it all. Just hilarious. So is Sonic really a girl or boy? They draw him/her very feminine but I think he's a boy? Strange enough. Also guessing there was something beyond his barely normal strength training regimen that lead to Saitama's strength that even he isn't aware of but which we'll eventually find out as a twist I hope. If not, it's still funny.

Pretty sure Sonic is a dude. There aren't too many main females in One Punch Man. The ones I can recall off the top of my head are Tatsumaki and her sister, Blizzard. One thing that's cool about the manga is that it has a ton of side-stories to it, and they kind of went into some of those. For example, there's a story where you get to see Blizzard and her group of B-class heroes go up against this creature, then Tatsumaki comes, then Saitama comes. The end is pretty good.

I also watched Gate and read the manga up to the latest. Decent enough I suppose, but still standard harem style action manga.

I was pretty disappointed by Gate. I don't think I even finished the anime. I like the parallel world setting, and it was interesting seeing it with a heavy military focus rather than just a few people. I actually got a better series out of Outbreak Company, which was about introducing otaku culture to a parallel world. It also had plenty of ecchi, but it didn't get super weird about it like Gate did with its loli girl rape scenes (loli girl trying to rape dude).

Fair enough. Hell, my video decode is still done in software (ffdshow + custom filter chain), mainly because it's been working for years and I have to upscale a lot of legacy SD content.

Of course, a combo like MPC-HC + MadVR + xyVSFilter sounds interesting, just haven't had the time to look into that.

Gakusen Toshi Asterisk looks interesting.
Like the music and visuals, reminds me of Irregular at Magic High School.

I found it ordinary.
*shrug* Might give it a go late next year when the 2nd cour / season finishes up.

As far as Heavy Object, isn't it written by the same guy who did A Certain Magical Index and A Certain Scientific Railgun? Checked out an eps or two and it seems nice so far, particularly the military antics and sex jokes :p

Not gonna lie. I liked G Gundam. (far more so than Wing, in hindsight) The part where dommon defeats the devil gundam only by sacrificing his brother was more powerful than a lot of the Gundam spin offs.

This is a little off topic, but I've been hearing about various Gundam series for years now and have no idea what they're about except they're mechas. I tried watching an older series and I just couldn't get into it. So if you had to pick one gundam series to watch which one would it be. Keep in mind that this would be for gundam newbie so either it has to cover some of the backstory or backstory isn't really important.

I think the original, Mobile Suit Gundam is the best. But it doesn't explode out of the gate and make every appeal to modern day attention spans. You have to stick with it to really appreciate it. I think this was when they were their most creative. After it became a big franchise I think they took fewer risks. Gihren Zabi especially has parallels to Hitler.

depends on what you are willing to tackle.

the original Universal Century canon:
  • gundam 0079
  • gundam 0080 war in the pocket
  • gundam 0083 stardust memory
  • gundam 08th team
  • gundam zeta
  • gundam double zeta
  • gundam f91
  • gundam V
  • gundam X
  • gundam unicorn

0083 is generally the most accessible to western audiences as it has all new characters, at only 13 ep it cant get too complicated on character backstory

alternate universes/reboots
  • wing gundam
  • turn A gundam
  • gundam G
  • gundam seed
  • gundam 00
  • gundam reconguista
  • gundam age
  • gundam iron blood orphans
other
  • gundam SD
  • beginning build
  • build gundam
  • build gundam try fighters

00 is my favorite of the alternate worlds if you skip the movie. the build series are a meta commentary on the actual building of the model kits, only they happened to throw in an actual plot and real character development just to confuse things.

Iron-blooded Orphans is great so far! Grittier like the 90s series (eg. 08th MS, Wing).
I tried to like AGE and Reconguista (loved the OP-EDs), but ...

Speaking of mecha, finished watching Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai (Haganai for short), and the mecha porn jokes are just hilarious!

[lovingly snipped]
That is a wonderful summary. Thank you. I have never been able to figure out the sequence or placement of any of the series so this is like the Rosetta Stone of Gundam-ese.:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Clipped to Evernote.

If you want a Gundam series that is more serious and feels a bit like the older series, Gundam Unicorn might be a good entry point. It has one big positive: it's a bit newer. This helps in that sometimes the very old animation can be a bit jarring, but the one problem with Unicorn for new viewers is that it references older UC stuff... mostly Char. If you don't know who Char Aznable is, then it doesn't make much sense why they keep asking about him. Although, if you want to learn who Char is, you can watch the newer series, Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin.

If you're looking for a series that's more along the current vein of shows, I think I'd go with... Gundam SEED. Gundam SEED is the point where I'd say that the series started to drop downhill a bit. Gundam 00 isn't bad, but it isn't as good as SEED and after that... whew. Let's not talk about those! You know it's saying something when the best Gundam show in recent memory is one about Gundam toys.

Now, if I were to strictly suggest one based upon music, I'd be hardpressed not to mention After War Gundam X. I mean... how can you not like its openings? Opening 1, Opening 2 (Warning: this one has a loud initial note) Although, Gundam SEED does have one advantage in this category... it has none other than TM Revolution! Opening 1 When it comes to all-around best soundtrack, my favorite is Gundam Wing. It's a great soundtrack by Otani Ko, and the TWO-MIX vocal themes are good too. White Reflection (from Endless Waltz) is my favorite out of those.

Hm, I never finished that series, but I remember the flat-chested girl calling the big-breasted girl "niku" (Japanese for "meat") all the time. :p

I like the Yozora character. Not very often you see such a flaming a*shole / smarta*s of a female character, and the "meat" puns are all pretty clever :p
That and her forcing Sena (the busty girl) to read lines from the eroge she keeps playing out loud!

Thanks. I didn't really understand most of that but as soon as I get back into anime, I'm going to try to suss things out and see if I can get into the series.

See if you can get your hands on the HD remasters of SEED (and if you want) SEED Destiny.
HUGE improvement, and not a crappy upscale like a lot of early efforts (especially Funimation).

Agreed with Aikouka that SEED's music is among the best. When you have TMR, See-Saw, FictionJunction and Nami Tamaki, it's bound to be good (though High and Mighty Color's numbers in SEED Destiny were awesome as well).

In terms of having a Two-Mix like sound, I guess more contemporary equivalents would be maybe fripSide, Altima or Garnidelia.

Endless waltz had the best soundtrack of them all. That sound track when coupled with effective editing made a mind blowing 2 minute trailer of a mediocre movie. I mean psyched didn't even begin to describe how excited I was when I first saw the movie trailer in good stereo, it was that good.
