I just set up my directvdsl (formerly telocity) and it works fine through the enormous modem...but when I try and my linksys 4 port router w/ wap to the mix I can't connect. I've never had dsl with a static ip address before so maybe I'm doing something wrong in the setup. I enter all the info (ip, subnet mask, default gateway, primary and secondary dns, domain, and my userid and password) but when I click on connect it says connecting for a few moments and then I get the "can't connect to pppoe" error. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I do.
Yes, you are doing something wrong.

Remember, in the specs, how it says that you can use DHCP?
Does it say anything about PPPoE? I thought not.

So, go to the main setup screen, and DISABLE PPPoE.
Than, type in your ip/gateway/dns/etc. Hit "apply", and it should work like a charm. You won't have to "Connect", as long as the router is plugged in, it will be connected.

If that fails, and you want to trouble shoot, instead of specifying an IP, just choose "Get IP automatically."
Than, once it connects, copy down the info and go back and plug that in manually. That way you won't have to worry about the DHCP crap, it's much easier to just have it specified manually.

Let me know if you're still having trouble reading instructions, :)

"should" being the operative word...which unfortunately isn't the case. followed your steps but still no luck. should the wan lights on the router be lit even if it doesn't have an ip address yet? cause all mine are out....they light up when i hit apply (the link light goes green and the act and diag go red for a few seconds and then they all go out.)

YES.
Make sure the Telocity gateway is operating in ethernet mode, and not in usb mode.
Also, make sure it's on & activated.
The WAN light should ALWAYS be on, as long as it's plugged into the modem, whether the router has actually connected or not.

Use the cable that came with the gateway/modem, and plug it into the WAN port of the Linksys.

yeah, i thought so...even checked with linksys tech support. they said the wan link light should be on no matter what and that there were two possible reasons why it wouldn't be. 1) dead wan port, or 2) bad or wrong cable...then he told me i should be using a crossover cable instead of the straight through cable i had been using. i was using the cable that came with the modem...and it's a straight through. i've always used straight throughs before on all the linksys routers i've used so i don't really know if that's right. what's worse is i've already been to staples, circuit city and pc richards tonite to try and buy one but they were all out. guess i'll check compusa tomorrow. then i'll still have a dead wan port! what fun!

i assume it's operating in ethernet mode as it is working right now via ethernet, just without the router in the loop.

Yup, it's supposed to be crossover.

A way to check if the WAN port is dead is to grab a straight-through patch cable, and plug one end into the uplink port on the lan side, the other to the wan port.
Both lights should turn on.

If that doesn't work, than most likely you have a dead WAN port.

Here's to hoping the problem was the cable. . .

(BTW, if you're feeling adventurous, you can make the cable yourself, just buy a segment of cat 5 cable and a couple terminators.)
