Keep bringing up this question in other threads (mostly "getting rid of landline and will only use a cell phone" threads) but still haven't got a decent answer...

what about Satellite Receivers and monitored home alarms that need to be connected to a land line?

How would it work with these???

The 911 problem is as follows: Some jurisdictions use antiquated equipment in their 911 callcenters which cannot trace back VoIP calls. This is because the VoIP calls require an additional lookup to retrieve the address. Also, it is the CUSTOMER'S RESPONSIBILITY to make sure that the address on file with the VoIP company is the correct one.

AT&T, it'll work (if you turn on the "modem compatability" feature). This is new as of January. Not sure about other providers.

there's a big thread over in hot-deals about sunrocket.com

$199/year get's you 2 phone numbers, and there's codes floating around (or maybe you don't even need them) for free wireless phones (1phone w/base, 1 extension phone)

I've been using it a month and like it lots. I've still got about a week before my land-line gets disconnected and my number gets transferred, though.

$199/year pre-paid == < $17/mo, btw.... cancel anytime, 100% money back if within the first 30 days, prorated thereafter

more details in hot-deals

<-----Happy vonage user for over a year, I have it plugged into the incoming line for the house, so All jacks are hot. Another option is to get one of those wirelsess phone kits that has 4 or 5 handsets that all conect to one base station, then place them accordingly. Works great with my 802.11g network (although the VOIP box itself has to have a wired connection)

I have refferals as well...

did they ever fix the 911 problem?

where you couldnt call 911 from a broadband phone service?

911 wouldn't be able to pinpoint the location of the call (which they can do with a call made from a regular landline...

All you have to do is set up the 911 feature by giving them your physical address, and then it is set up do that no trace is needed.

I know someone who moved from Oregon to Italy along with his Vonage VOIP phone.

It's cheaper for him to call from Italy to London using his Vonage (routing call from Italy to US back to London) than directly from Italy to London.

So if you call his local 503 area code it rings him in Italy, freakin' awesome.

Well, got the LinkSys router from Circuit City last night (they're still offering it FAR - you actually make $0.01) and activated it via Vonage.com this morning and within about 2 min., I had an active phone line! Only had to pay the 1st month's service (just didn't want to wait for one to ship from Vonage.) Besides, I can now lower my cell phone usage and probably even out the monthlies.

P.S. Anyone interested in a referral, well, you know the drill 😉
