I found this and it sounds pretty good. Has anyone used it and able to speak for its performance?

Thanks,

Chad

It would be fine if only used for appearance tweaks and stuff. I am guessing it has a lot of stupid performance tweaks though that are not recommended. That is why i recommend staying away from programs like this. Especially a product from TweakXP which is filled with false information and bad advice.

Thanks. Do you have any suggestions for sites to find performance enhancing tweaks for WinXP Pro? I want my baby to run the best and fastest she can. Also, how about something like Regclean? Or is this also something you prefer to stay away from?

Thanks,

Chad

Here is a very good tweaking guide. XP Tweaks.

Seriously though every tweak guide out there has quite a bit of false info and general bad advice. There are some things that can imporve performance such as many visual tweaks, but the majority of tweaks you find out there are not what they claim to be.

Also, how about something like Regclean? Or is this also something you prefer to stay away from?

Yes I also recommend staying away from Regcleaners also. There will be no performance benefit from cleaning the registry. The registry is mapped and if a key is needed it will god irectly to this key. A registry cleaner also may at most only make the registry like 1MB smaller. This will make no difference at all in performance.

The #1 reason I recommend against using registry cleaners though is because you can encounter many problems by using them. It seems pretty silly to me that a Regcleaner knows exactly what is safe to remove and what is not. I actually did fix a friends Pc a while back when his internet connection was not working because he used some stupid registry cleaner thinking it will increase performance as that is what they claimed.

Use XPantiSpy, CrapCleaner and Spybot. I remember TweakXP being pretty useless, at least when I tried it.

I use Ace Utilities to delete junk files and delete junk from the registry. I also use Registry Defragmenter & Compactor.

I've been using this combo for some time now and never encountered any problems.

if you want to do a few minor tweaks i would rather do it in the registry myself. why have a program do it? most won't improve performance much if at all, but its nice to get rid of the balloon tips, menu delaysmessenger etc, but those and others are simple regedits.

in fact one of the features they boast on the download page, "by selecting to keep the Windows XP core system in memory and not paged to disk " i'm pretty sure has been shown to cause data corruption on large HDD, like 80 and above, but i'd have to look it up.

imo anyway, in short, just search tweaktown or elder geek for little regedits to rid yourself of annoyances. none will give great performance gains.

I use TuneUp Utilitites 2004

Just because the application says it clears RAM makes me not recommend it.

I use Ace Utilities to delete junk files and delete junk from the registry. I also use Registry Defragmenter & Compactor.

Ya, becauce cleaning the registry helps performance so much...
