I fly a lot for work and have been debating splurging on some noise canceling headphones for myself. I tried out a pair of the Sennheiser PCX450s today and was rather impressed with them.

Do any of you own a pair? Also wondering what other brands you guys might recommend as well as locations to purchase from should I decide to pull the trigger.

Thanks!

Santa Claus sent me a pair of the Bose headsqueezers a few years ago.
I wouldn't recommend paying retail for them. I do enjoy them on long airplane rides.

If you fly a lot they are a good investment. I agree the Bose are too expensive. I've heard a lot of good about Sennheiser. I have a pair of Sony that I got for $50-60 a few years ago and they are OK, not the best.

check out Beyer dynamics DT770Pro and Sennheiser HD280 Pro for passive isolating headphones. These puppies seal out the noise pretty well without requiring active cancellation techniques.

If you want more suppression of outside noise, the best performers are the IEMs. However, they are uncomfortable for me to use... You have to try them to see if you like/dislike them.

Noise canceling phones are worth it only if you fly a lot.

I personally wouldn't use the HD280 for long sessions since they clamp REALLY hard against your skull and the drivers sit on your ears also. A headache and sore ears are to be expected if listening session lasts anything more than an hour and a half.

I usually have 2-4 flights a week for 8-10 weeks at a time. Any hearing damage to be worried about from wearing these types of headphones?

I'm trying to remember which ones my wife has... they do work well with ambient background noise, but you might also consider using some of those noise-canceling earbuds.

Get IEMs. with so many tips to choose from you should be able to find one that will fit decently. For about the price of the PCX 450 you have a lot to choose from.

there are a ton of choice within your price range for closed cans or IEM. If you like to block noise IEM is better, to get the same comfort as cans you will need a custom IEM, it's still within the senn's price range but a hassle to get your impression taken and send in (check out the freq and livewires, but livewires seems to be more troublesome as is now). I don't like active NC because it doesn't work well in windy situation and a unnecessary complication.

Granted I've only worn a couple of cheaper in ear microphones, but I never felt that they were very comfortable. Upon doing more research, I'm heavily leaning towards the 450s...

I have some somewhat decent sony noise cancelling ones. A total lifesaver on my last series of airplane rides (from Miami to Phuket Thailand) - over 30 hours+. Just having em on drowning out the motors and the screaming kids was worht 3x the price.

As for headphones they certainly seem louder because the background noise is very muted, thus less volume needed for enjoyment.

What Sony model do you have?

Not in my hand, but I can reply in a few hours when I can get at them.

Actually a quick google brought them up:

Comfortable enough to wear for nearly 30 straight hours, and I think they were $100. I didn't have much choice - was told I had to go around the world the next morning so I ran out to get them. Not bad for a shot in the dark.

How long of a session are you talking about? My HD280 don't start to be uncomfortable until after about 4 hours. They're incredible for noise cancelling.

I can only stand them for an hour and a half at a time. Anymore than that, I'll develop headaches and sore ears.

Part of the reason might be because I'm spoiled by my other headphones.

I have the noise isolating set from ER.

I have had them for a few years and I love them.

I took 48 flights last year, and not one with out them.

They work like earplugs when I can not have my Zune on. I also use them when working in the yard with Power tools and they block everything out.

Ended up pulling the trigger on the Sennheiser PXC450s for $223 shipped brand new in the box from Ebay after the 14% Live.com coupon.
