is the MS S&T with a GPS Locator connected to a laptop better than the stock cars or aftermarket navigational systems?

i want navigation... but with the expensive aftermarket systems.. it seems like this MS ST thing is a better route to go...

but how does it compare with the rest?

EDIT: would like feedback from 2006 users also

What is this for:
Internet Connection Optional: modem (14.4 Kbps or faster recommended); Internet access for Internet functionality

As far as I am concerned, it's just as good. But, it's way bulkier.
We set our lap top on a TV tray between the seats of our RV and the GPS unit on the dash. I'd rather have an in dash unit but that's about $1000 where as I got the GPS and software for about $125 for my lap top.

did 2005 have voice communication? im really interested in how it monitors mileage and things.. what do you need to plug into the car? besides the 12v to ac adapter?

I don't know if it supports voice function; my friend and I just used it to track our progress on a road trip for fun. Besides the 12V to A/C to keep the lappy running, just a clear view of the sky was required, easy since we were in a convertible :)

The internet connection is for downloading possible construction zones for use during route planning.

The new S&T 2006 has some limited voice, although it uses microsoft's own text-to-voice engine.

Check out this thread over at gpspassion.com for little more info on the 2006 version.

For voice prompted assistance I used Garmin's nRoute with their maps, on a laptop.
