we use this for our math class and using it right now for an assignment..the teacher did a example ..here it is http://math.ucsd.edu/courses/math21d/matlabhw/Taylor_series/Taylor.htm ... but the first thing she did was type syms x in matlab to define the symbolic value..but when i type that in matlab, i ge this:

>> syms x
??? syms x
|
Error: Missing operator, comma, or semicolon.

>>

anyone know why, or how to do it?

thanks

u sure you have the symbolic toolbox? maybe you didn't install it? although you can't do much without it, i don't know why you wouldn't have it. that's the only reason i can think of: there's nothing wrong with your command. 'syms x' should reserve a variable x

i just loaded up matlab, typed syms x

and everything worked fine.

try switching to a different computer if you are in a lab, or reinstall it if you are using it at home.

we use it in the lab..but i downloaded a copy off morpheus so i can work on the problems at home too..i just checked the "Launch Pad" box, and i just rememebred in the lab it had a lot of stuff loaded in there, but here on my home comp, it only has "MATLAB", and "MATLAB Compiler".. is there suppose to be a symbolic thing in there? How would i go about loading it? thanks
