I can only see new versions of ICQ getting worse and more bloated. I cannot stand using that program any more, went with MSN Messenger and am a lot happier.

I have been using ICQ 2001a Alpha for a couple of months.
It works fine with Windows 2000 but it doesnt run particularly well in XP.
They have attempted to down size the app by allowing a download and add new features installer.

I really liked how "compact" ICQ99 was. If that download new feature thing works good, that should help. I only use icq for messaging and sending a file once in a while.

Well, I just downloaded it and played around with it. and I must say, It is the best version of ICQ to date (and I've used every single one ever since 98a).

1. The download is like that of IE, allowing you to install only the features you want. My download was 3mb

2. The UI is MUCH cleaner than 2000x and is more like that of 99a. All the crap has been cleaned and all the useless features are hidden.

3. Has advanced text functions (highlights, emoticons etc)

And most importantly:

4. it uploads your contact list to ICQ's servers and allows you to use your ICQ from any computer, including a Java ICQ version running as an applet.

Overall, it simply rules :D

oh, and BTW, my ICQ mem usage is 6mb, compared to the 12+ on icq2000.
