Anyone here use Altiris?

Kelemvor

Lifer
I'm job hunting now and got an offer from a company doing PC setups and such and they said they manage a lot of it with Altiris. I've never heard of that program before and I'm not really sure what it does. If you've used it or know what it can do, let me know so I have some more information before I have to go in to talk with someone.

THanks!

it is like SMS or other "client" management systems

you can use it to install software , configure them and administer your systems

HP (Compaq) bought Altiris several years ago

Yeah, I think you go it.

Symantec just bought them a couple weeks ago. Decent product. It was used at my old job to manage about 30K clients.

Pushes out updates, software installs, can track assets, etc. I've never used the back end of it, just installed the client. I'm sure if you've administrated a similar software in the past you can pick it up.

It's got few different parts. I think most of them have been mentioned. It installs software on the client machine which then reports back to the server. It can be used to track inventory (hardware and software), remote access, install and delete software, etc. It also has a function where it builds profiles for users so that if their machine goes down, you could theoretically grab another machine, push the profile down, and have the person continue working as if nothing happened. My company is going to be testing that out soon.

If they hired you knowing you've never used it, then you'll be fine. You'll need a little bit of training, but it's nothing too hard to pick up.

No HP didn't buy them. HP(compaq) ships a hybrid of it with all their servers though.

To answer the original posters questions. Like FoBoT said. Its a way of managing computers for the company, one of the great features is deploying systems where you can send images with pre-installed programs and configurations to computers and servers. Makes the IT guys job a helluva lot easier.
