I used an Alpha 8045U for a long time. I think it's an excellent cooler, but I just replaced it with a Thermalright 900U with a 92MM fan.

The 8045 is designed to work better with the fan drawing air up from board-level. When adding active NB cooler to my 8RDA+ I noticed CPU temps rose 1C/2C. It was sucking hot air expelled from the NB cooler through the cooling pins. Reversing the fan was no help, because the 8045U is truly more efficient when the fan is sucking air throught the cooling pins.

I'm pleased with 900U. The fan is a YS-Tech 92mm fan rated 66CFM and noise is not objectionable. Due to the non-square profile of the 900U, the fan also directs air directly toward the board on two sides. This is a nice attribute, since it provides a stream of air to cool MOSFETs and other board-level components near the CPU.

Hope this helps!

My Alpha 8045/Vantec Stealth 80mm are doing a fine job keeping my 2500+ @ 3200+ cool. 42C idle / 47C loaded. Nice and quiet, too.

Edit: Fixed typo.

Even though the 8045 is a granddaddy now, it's still one of the top sktA coolers you can get, a great testament to how well it's designed

I'm using one to cool my 2500+ @ 2.2, 1.8v with a Sunon ultra high speed @ 7v. I have my fan blowing DOWN on the heatsink. See this thread for more info on fan direction and the role of the shroud on the heatsink.

My fan is blowing down as well, it is actually helping my passive Zalman NB cooler out I believe. :)

Using a pal8045 w/ a 49cfm sunon 80mm to cool a 1700xp at 2.2ghz. Blowing down cools about 1 degree C better than sucking consistantly with full load.

It's still great :)
