It's a gynamstic move that involves the rings, in which you make your arms parellel to the ground with your legs straight, putting you in the position of the cross.

I've tried it and it really is damn impossible, and it is even for many gymnasts.

LOL! (I really did laugh out loud for this one)

It's probably super difficult for anyone not a gymnast.

Throwing a baseball (i'm assuming you pitched a baseball 82mph) is all about technique, not strength.

Throwing a baseball does not take a whole lot of strength...it can help and a certain level is necessary, but it's far more technique than strength.

The Iron Cross. Goddamn that is hard. Try an inverted one. No, I can't do either, I used to be able to get to about the 20 degrees mark which is really good. Most Olympic caliber gymnasts _cannot_ do a true Iron Cross. Even Nemov can't really do it, but then rings are his weakest event.

EDIT:

I wonder how many people are coming in this thread thinking an Iron Cross is either a new drink or a kinky sex position? :)

Back in hs when I pole vaulted, the PV crew would go ie gym and work on the rings on rainy or windy days. We all tried it everytime we were in there, never really came close...

What muscle does it involve? I can't even figure that out, which means that muscle used must really be underdeveloped on me.. up to a certain point, the lats don't play a role anymore, feels like a weird part of the shoulder and triceps.

Personally, I thought you were talking the ski trick.

I can do one of those.

For those not in the know, on skis an Iron Cross is when you hit a jump, cross the tips of your skis and pull them back behind you, like a daffy.

It's a C strength move for the still rings in men's gymnastics. Hard, but not that hard. Hard, for a strength move, is an inverted iron cross. Definitely harder (CC strength move as I recall).

Want a really difficult move on the still rings: german giants. Remember...the rings are not supposed to move, they're still rings. :)

I don't know, I'd tend to disagree that it is a hard, but not really hard move. You very rarely see a perfect iron cross in Olympic competition...most of the ones that the gymnasts get credit for are not all the way level with straight arms like they should be.

dcdomain: I'm not sure what muscle actually...for me it was mostly lats, but that is why I couldn't get down level. I have great lats, but those last twenty degrees are something in the shoulders, and I (like you I guess? :) just don't have it (not even close.)

Yeah, a giant is a more difficult maneuver skill wise, but the iron cross is almost pure strength.

N8Magic: Johnny Mosely did the iron cross with a toe grab to win the gold in Nagano, right? I can't remember what he called the move...a mute grab? When I used to ski, I could do a really pathetic iron cross, but I couldn't do a daffy to save my life. I found it much easier to get the skis back after an iron cross attempt, then after a daffy.

Took gymnastics lessons for 5 years... never got to play around on the rings, though. I much preferred the balance beam.

N8Magic ~ I can do one of those, too!! :)
