What was your experience with the class. How was the first day. Did the teacher make you talk about yourself the very first day in front of the whole class. Was the class a really tight knit group of friends after the class was over? Post your experiences.

I'm taking it this spring. Can't imagine it being all that difficult.

You sound like you're afraid of public speaking, though. Nervous? (or am I just plain wrong)

just remmber nobody gives a crap about you. well..yeah. most are just listening for pointers on how to improve their speech. their listening for techniques, not your life goals.

I'm a freshman in college, and I'd never taken speech before taking it at college, but I've had a lot of fun with the class. Our first speech was a mini-speech where we got up and talked for a minute about our hobbies. Then we did two informative speeches and one persuasive speech, and our second persuasive speech is happening in two weeks.

Public speaking is a lot easier if you have visual aids to play with while you're up there. Other than that, the best thing to do is practice your speech in front of a mirror. I have to do that about 10 times before I can get up and sound conversational and all while I'm speaking.

That course is either CTAS 121 or CTAS 124 here. I opted for 124, which is a full 3 credit hours (instead of 2). I dropped it. The professor had no clue how to get people comfortable speaking infront of others. Yelling at the class for a shortcoming in his original assignment was appauling. I won't be taking any sort of speech class until it's absolutely necessary.

I started a thread about it a while ago. It was the same day my building caught fire and nobody woke me up.

EDIT: I took speech in high school btw.

Cool man!

Best of luck to you. Practicing in front of a mirror sounds like a good idea.

I really hated giving speechs (and I still do) but after taking the speech class I know that I can give a good speech, so I'm not as nervious now as I used to be. What got me thru the class was giving speechs on topics I was knowledgable<sp?> about, felt strongly about, and/or enjoyed.

From what I heard from a counselor.. she said that Speech here is just like that. The teacher will get you comfortable first, and at the end of the semester you and your class will probably a close bunch.

Took COMS 130, which was speech.

Based on what I hear from other people, I got lucky on the TA that taught my class. Everyone else I talked to in one of the other sections hated it. I really enjoyed it, but our TA would let me give speeches on Nintendo and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, so it wasn't too rough.

i was in the same position as you this past summer.
i needed to take this public speaking class in order to fulfill a requirement. but i hate public speaking.

i ended up taking the class over the summer, it was real nice because their aren't as many students in the class as opposed to taking it during the school year.

all i can say is, dont feel nervous, of course you'll feel nervous giving your first speech, but you know what, your not going to be the only one, the majority of the class will feel the same.

after a while, it'll be easy, less nervous. i actually enjoyed that class(gave a speech every class).
i really got to know the other students in the class because we were always interacting with each other.

good luck

See if you can get some Inderal and other beta blocker or maybe a small dose of Valium. I always take 5 - 6 Inderal's before I go to speak and it makes me calm because it slows my heart rate down.

Just finished public speaking 401. I was super nervous going in, but I think I aced it(can't wait for grades to come out). It was my last class for my Bachelors and I was worried it was going to screw up my gpa. The class actually did me a lot of good. I'm glad I took it. I learned something of use.

I am taking SP 111 right now. It is a public speaking class and we are required to do 1 informative speech (5-6 min.), 1 persuasive speech(7-8 min), 2 group presentations(18-20 min), and 1 group debate(18-20 min).

As with any SP class the first day was an impromptu 2 min. introduction to the whole class. It went pretty well. I am currently working with 3 other people from my class to get one of 20 min. presentation underway.

I post questions on OT often and this helps me get a few good opinions about a particular subject.

It's an easy class and if not for my lazy team members, I would actually say it is a fun class. :)

i had a 3 college classes pertaining to speech. 2 of them in business. best prep courses i took before signing up for those classes was Dale Carnigie. plus, i got college credits for them too. i'd say all of those classes emphasized having confidence in yourself. to have confidence, they all preached proper preparation. if you knew your subject matter thoroughly, and you were sure about the message you wanted to convey, then an air of confidence, comfort and ease would be conveyed to the audience.

not to change the subject, but i think debate classes were alot more fun. :D

this is the reason I didn't continue school sadly. From what I see I would need to take a couple speech classes and im deathly afraid of being singled out among peers. I have this left over from high school, not fitting in and stuff. BUT I don't have a problem speeking my mind about something I know about or among older people, etc. if it was required.

I simply don't have the social skills cause I was stunted as a youth and it sucks ass

That's too bad damac, you should have tried. I too am scared to death of public speaking, although its not so bad as I get older, and I came out OK.
