I'm watching Strange Medicine on Discovery and I feel like throwing up. Doctors are amazing for not only their skills but their ability to hold their stomach in.

YOu become desensitiesed to it quite quickly. And some people just aren't bothered by compound factures etc as much as others.

Compound fractures? We're talking about scalps being completely torn off, entire faces taken off with only skeleton showing, flesh eating bacterias, etc. Yes some cases are small and rare but when becoming a doctor you know you might face such drastic situations.

20/20 videotaped these nurses making fun of men's "sizes" while drugged out on the OR table...but the kicker was these patients weren't fully anesthisized (sp?) so they could actually hear em laughing

now, that hurts

If you're interested in such things, I recommend reading Sidney Sheldon's book "Nothing Lasts Forever."
It's about the life of medical doctors and nurses, "jazzed up" for the casual reader. Very interesting.

While we're on the subject, sort of, I've got a questions that's been bugging me. Do people STINK when you cut them open? Think about it, poop stinks, farts stink, bad breath stinks, they don't make these products for nothing.

So I'm wondering, when they cut you open in the operating room, does the room sudden smell bad?

I was a surgical assistant for several years. In fact, a few of those real-life trauma shows were filmed at our hospital. If you think the sights and sounds are bad, be thankful your television doesn't transmit the smell, it can be over the top.

As for how people can 'tolerate' that stuff, its really an issue of being in command of your emotions. Some people are terrified of harmless little insects. They allow some small fear to snowball out of control. Its the same with guts, you have to get ahold of yourself or you'll lose it.

Learning anatomy and physiology dispells some of the mystery about what's inside us, and that helps put a new perspective on things. You take an anatomy class, then later you see someone with a compound fracture. Everybody is grossing out, wondering what to do, and you're over there thinking to yourself 'Hey, I know what that is, that's a tibia!' :p

Lots of regular people with no medical training stop and help in automobile accidents and keep their composure when there are body parts all over the place. If you freak, you're not only no good to anyone, but you might actually harm someone. Its what separates the men from the boys!

I was Fire-Rescue for 4 years and I've seen my share. You know what? For me, seeing it in person wasn't as bad as seeing on TV. When we'd roll up on say a bad car accident, we were so busy concentrating on get them out of the wreckage and packaged up for transport that it really didn't hit us. Except when it was kids - then you'd see some freaked out firemen. I guess seeing it on tv lets you get "up close" to all the goo and stuff... I guess you just have to have the stomach for it.

I read that book a few years ago. It was a good read. He used to be my favourite author. :)

I can stand the sight of almost anything, but if the smell is too strong, it's over. good thing doctors don't do surgery with their noses.

For a more precise answer to your question...

Unless there is an infection, or a release of gastric/intestinal contents into the abdomen, people don't "stink" when you cut them open. If there is, yeah, they stink. Infections are by far worse than the smell of crap.

There is, however, a distinct smell to guts. If you've ever dressed a deer, where there is no injury to the stomach or intestines, that's it. It doesn't smell "bad", just different. Fresh blood also gives off a scent, sort of like a very faint scent of bleach, but isn't noticeable unless you have a fair amount.
